Default Another "How much is my car worth" thread?

I hate it when people ask that, as I know something is worth what someone will pay for it. But I may need to sell the XR8 soon in order to get something with a smaller asset value to free up some "cash", so thought I'd ask those who may be in a good position to judge what she's worth (she being the car - "Blue Streak").

Anyway, most of you have seen the car on here before, and some have even seen it in person. It goes great at the moment, and stops even better, now that it has upgraded AU2 spec suspension and BA brakes (the XR8 version!!!). It is dual fuel and I've had no issues for a while now, whioch is great. $35 a week in LPG (@ around 59 cpl) gets me $300 to 350 kms (roughly 18l/100km). It scored a fully rebuilt auto about 2 years ago under warranty. So...that's the good.

The issues it has:
It's an ex-cop car, so the interior has a few marks in it, but is still serviceable with no major broken bits (ie seats, pedals and wheel all work, and DVD system works a treat)

A clunky diff - common as muck, I know, and probably easily fixed, but not something I could get fixed before selling.

The body, while in reasonable condition, has a few little chips etc. With 160000km on the clock I guess that's to be expected. But the paint is crap. It's been touched up a few times (by previous owner and me), and the boot and rear spoiler were sprayed by me - not the best job, but looks good from a distance if you squint, lol!

So, I guess I'm looking at what sort of price I should ask initially. Redbook says $9000 to $11700 with between 120 & 200,000km. So that's a good place to start. Now the LPG system is worth $2500, plus the DVD system another $1000, and the BA brake upgrade worth another $1000 at commercial prices. Obviously addingall of that to the $11700 isn't going to work, as that would take the price up to BA XT range (approx $16k). Adding it to the $9000 is probably a little low as it doesn't give me much room to move. I reckon if I put an XR50 kit on it, I could probably get $16k for it (with a few resprayed panels as well), but no point spending $3 to $4k just to get an extra $2k in the sale!

So....I was thinking around the $14500 mark - does that sound reasonable, or am I pipe dreaming? Anyone interested at that price? I may just list it on allclassifieds anyway, and see what happens.

Im not sure where it sits but the price seems a litte high, you may look at striping the parts and doing it that way, mods never really return the $ you spend on them.

i look at it this way say that car was worth 40K new and is now 10K that is a 75% from new price, so i would value any mod regardless of age at cost less 75%, but thats just me.

Then i would take into account tyres, brakes, rego etc. to give the final price. ie if these things were all good id start at the 11.7k or high mark if bad i would start at the low mark 9K.

I understand about not getting money back on mods, but looking through the papers etc for AU1 XR8s, they range from $10k up to $18k, and then there's EFs for $13 to $15k, and BAs as low as $25k. It's hard to know where to fit in to it all.

I've set price at $15500 and am happy to go down (not that way...) from there.

You should be close as it is a well known and cared for car, my scotish calculator puts it around $11,500 the paint you mentioned, plus interior being a big factor in a lower price, it will be intersting to see but if we took middle ground $13,500 or abouts.

JC the clunky diff is easily fixed in a 1/2 hour if you want to. Just change the oil to Penrite 85w/140 Limslip gear oil and the Penrite LSD additive and all your clunks will go away. Not really a major thing I know but something like that does have the potential to scare off a prospective buyer, especially if they have looked at another in the same price range.

Thanks Red - I changed the diff oil about 12 months ago, and used the oil specced in the handbook, which I think was an 80/130, so I'll give this a go. I'm hoping it's just an oil issue, but am worried that it might actually be a few loose teeth. I suppose I'll do the oil first and see.

Since the diff oil is fairly new anyway, would it be worth just adding the additive and see how that goes? I might answer my own question here and try it anyway - if it doesn't work, I'll just spend the extra and do it all!

Did the diff oil change after work, and added the additive, and apart from being the worst job to do with the car on ramps and without a hand pump, it's worked a treat. The clunk is definitely gone - thanks for the tip Red.

my opinion on this would be set it $15000 ono, with 6mths rego and all you have listed and dont go lower then $12500. its a nice car, and someone would be a fool to pass up the oppertunity to purchase a well looked after XR.
just my 2 cents.

Don't bother spending any more on it youll never get the extra back in a million years. XR8 V8 Autos arent the hottest selling things to be honest. when they get the age they are now the ave age of the ave buyer means they will pay more for a manual than an auto. The red book is actually pretty generous if you go to a few auctions to see the dollars they really do fetch. Still its a good one and if you can find that one buyer who wants one and has the money to pay your price I would hold out for a good price. if you don't its not really worth selling at the wholesale type prices you will be offered as you wont get enough cash to buy anything smaller and decent and have spare cash.

I got some wonderful offers for the wagon $5k trade ins you know. No one who appreciates the mods really wants to buy a modded one either thay all want to do it thmeselves

It all depends on how long you want to hold on to it for.

All i got for my XR8 manual ute 3 years ago was $16000.00 with 140k on the clock.

My AU2 wagon is going out the door at $8000.00 with 137k.

I had a EF 5.0 (ex cop) dual fuel i tried to trade on the above wagon 5 years ago and they offerd me $3000 so i took it home and advertised it for $7200 and was happy to take $6000.

You will need to be thinking like a buyer if you realy want to sell it.......

It had to have been marked wrong. Wrong sticker or something because there's just no way it could have been the right price.

You'd have to be right I reckon Krissy. Way too high, even for overpriced car yards! LOL!

up here I've seen a few XR6's marked in the low 20's with 120-150k's. it wouldn't suprise me if 1 in good nick with low k's was advertised for that here.

Guys, thanks for the input, but I'm after realistic prices, not pie in the sky stuff. I've settled on $13500 ONO, and am open to negotiation.

I would keep the car if I didn't need the money, as I'm just starting to reap the savings on the LPG installation. Unfortunately I need the cash more than the car.

Will be taking it to dealers in the next week or two to see how much they will ream me to give me cash for it, but it's getting closer to the point where I will have no choice but to take best dealer offer.

$13500??? Seems if I sell the Ghia at $65oo it should sell then.

I think XR8 seem to hold in value beter than a V8 Ghia.

Thanks for the offer, however I am only toying with the idea at the moment. If i got a offer of 6500 I would take it, but its not officially for sale as such. I may be getting a company car soon and also looking back into a 4wds again.

Anyway dont want to hijack your post. I do think XR8`s seem to hold their price well. You will stay pay the 6k+ plus for El and Ef etc. Where as I will be lucky to get that for my AU.

Personally I think youre on the mark for you XR8. Good luck with it

Dont bother with the dealers for a cash buy they will ream you soundly.
Even for a trade on a new car i got some very disappointing offers.

Not trying to offend JC, but I'm guessing dealer's will offer you around the 7k mark.

Have you thought about removing all the mods & returning it to standard? Sell off all your mods & then sell your car.

Don't worry, I know the range dealers will offer, and $7k is on the high side. There's not really that many mods to it apart from 18s. The rest are kind of permanent (LPG, bodykit etc).

My sister has a 01 AUII Forte on dedicated EGAS. Its done nearly 140,000kms and has 12mths rego.
Any idea what they go for, theres not much forsale the same last i checked.

She's looking do down size, So it will be on the market very soon.
My brother in law just got $4k trade in for his 01 Forte wagon with around the same kays, so that would be around $7 to 8K private sale. My advice would be to advertise at $11k and accept anything over $9k - the LPG should be a plus with the current fuel prices.

If you start now by lowering the price each week it may be a whole lot better than being in a position where you have no option but to take the dud dealin by a dealer who knows they have you by the curleys.
