Default New shocks for the XR6

Hello All,

I have just got a quote on having the suspension done in my XR6 and they have come back with 2 prices.

first package with Koni Adjustable shocks and king super lows - $1870 fitted.
second package with Blistein shock and king super lows - $1600 fitted.

My question is, are te koni's any better than the blistein's?

Also would anyone be interested in the shocks & springs from my XR6?

they have about 130K on them.

cheers

Imo i'd go with the Koni's but that's my preference.

Its up to you mate, there both really good shocks so just depends how hard you want it to hit the hip pocket.

well for $200 extra it really doesn't bother me, but is $1800 a lot for a set of Koni adjustables with king super lows?

Go the bilstiens, honestly, why do you need adjustables?
In my opinion, I think the bilstiens are a better shock to.
I couldn't tell you how many K's you would get with a set of shocks, how long is a piece of string. Could hit a gutter and bust a shock next week, could drive smooth roads and they will last as long as the car, could drive down bumpy pot-holed roads and bugger them in 20,000ks.
At a guess, id say at least 100,000ks, before having another look at them.

That would have to be one of the rare times I have seen Koni reds ? cheaper than a Bilstein.
Konis are GOOD,heck there on my TS but if I ever change my struts Bills will be the ones.

The Koni's have been ordered, I have had good experiences with Koni's in the past so I will stick with them yet again.

What is it about Koni's and Bilsteins that make them so popular and hence more expensive? Is the ride quality, build quality, the name or something else?

Boutique brands......
Higher quality components..
Build quality.....hence the longer lasting
Valving.....
Links going back with some of the best Motorsport teams/house's to this day, hence ongoing development....
Limited distribution hence tighter pricing no need to prostitute......

Not saying that the other brands don't do the job but like everything you get what you pay for.

Thats fair to say. Bit like comparing BMW with an FG I suppose.

Koni reds are not as good as the Bilstein HD sport, but the Koni yellows are IMO.
I have used all of them, and I preferred the Koni yellow.
They had the most control, whilst still keeping the ride un-harsh.

The bilsteins have just as much control, however they tend to be harsher IME.

Both are excellent shocks though and a several levels above Monroe, KYB, Gabriel, etc..

Build quality and clever engineering.
Top quality shocks have the uncanny ability to provide an excellent ride, whilst still keeping more than enough control to make for a great handling vehicle.
Multi stage valving, better oils, higher pressure, mono tubes, etc, all play a part in how well the shock performs.

Never had Koni red's so I cant comment, but Ive had billies and Koni yellows and 100% agree with the above.
Maybe your getting too old that's why the Bilsteins are too harsh :
I did what Bluedriver said he would, I went from Koni to Bilstein and from now on they will be fitted to every car I ever own. (of course if they are available)

Thanks Rik. Perhaps when my BOGE's give up the ghost, I'll opt towards the Billies or Koni's. I like the thought of having adjustable ones.

I didn't say they were too harsh, I said they are harsher than Koni Yellows.

I just don't see much point in having any extra harshness is there is no other advantage.

YMMV.

I believe that the ones I am getting are the koni Sport yellow shocks, they are the adjustable ones.

I didn't think that the red ones were adjustable?

I had a look on the koni website but couldn't find any thing about adjusting the red ones.

cheers

Yellow are externally adjustable, meaning you can adjust them while on the car.

Red need to be removed from the car to be adjusted.

Hey All,

I have a question

According to the koni website it says that for my XR6 I should have sport shocks for the front of my XR and special ones for the rear, so does this mean that it would have yellow sports on the front and red specials for the rear?

or would it be yellow all round or red all round?

See the application list on the Koni website.

I'd go with the Koni's bloke. While you are at it find out how much a
30mm whiteline front swaybar will be. It make a huge dif and compliments
the Koni's really well.
As for your question relating to type. I had to get red's for the back
because it is all that was aval for the irs at the time.
