A search brought up how to enter diagnostic mode on the dash cluster BUT:
Why does my AU1 Fairmont show the odometer when i turn on the ignition but my AU2 Fairmont shows the trip meter? Both have the full instrumentation cluster. Is there any way to swap which is the "default" readout? I use the trip meter all the time and find myself changing it from odometer to trip meter every time I get in the car in my AU1. Maybe it's me subconsciously hiding the ever-increasing odometer reading...?  Also, a separate thing but the guru's reading this will probably know: Can an AU2 smart-shield remote keypad be used on an AU1.5 (with smart-shield)? Obviously NO is the answer for an AU1 with smart-lock but if it's the AU1 'update' maybe it's compatible? Has anyone tried? |

In my experience, the odometer is never hidden from view on any series of AU. So this is news to me.

Well the odometer isn't "hidden" it's just not the default readout. It displays the trip meter until you press the little button then it rotates it to the odometer.
My other AU is the other way around...? Weird! |

I recall my 2001 AU2 Fairmont displays both the Odo and the trip meter all the time, and I have the 'full' instrumentation cluster!
With the ignition not on, only the odometer reading is visible. I can't recall ever not having both visually available, with the ignition on, with the reset function button doing just that when selected. Cheers |

my AU2 shows the ODO and trip at the same time, as they're in separate areas. I'm not understanding what you mean by 'rotating' to the other..

Wow weird... Maybe I've got "something special" lol.
I click the ignition ON on my AU1 and the odometer is visible in the little screen on the cluster. Press the reset knob once and the readout changes to the trip-meter. Press and HOLD the reset knob and it resets the trip-meter. Click the ignition ON on my AU2 and the trip-meter is visible in the little screen. Press the reset knob once and it changes the readout to the odometer. Press and HOLD the reset knob and it resets the trip-meter. Not really a big deal but I use my trip meter regularly and find every time I get in the car I need to start the engine and switch the display. |

As far as the instrumentation is concerned, there is no difference between IGN ON (only) and ENGINE RUNNING.
Therefore there shouldn't be any need to start the engine to switch instrument selections! Cheers... |
