Any AU XR6 Defualts?

Hi all.

I am currently about to purchase my Au Xr6 99 model. Does anyone know any defaults with the model. Oh and Russ if u are reading this where is that sort of info on this forum?

Is it an XR6 HP or XR6 VCT?
99 model, is that an AU1 or early AU2?

There is an etire section under aufalcon.com that is dedicated to the AU and will be able to answer everything you want hopefully.

It is a series one with the round lights and i think its just the V6. So yeah any problems with that model!?!?!?!?! Cheers

V6? Yikes, dont say that too loud!

AU1's pretty much have the same problems regardless of what model they are, the main ones being the suspension and the brakes (and the styling if you ask some people!).

Depending on whether it is an IRS equipped model or not (unsure if any AU1 XR's were though), check the shock towers and mounts, and definately give the brakes a good once over as well.

I had to watch out for a rattling in the engine which worked out to be cracked guides. Other than that I upgraded my brakes with better pads and there's really been no other problems with the car.

Check the condition of the window seals, particularly in and around the top of the rear doors, the windscreen etc etc.

I'm hoping your V6 translates to VCT 6 he he.

Fitting of a V6 would certainly have voided any factory warrantee

The V in V6 is in relation to the engine configuration. Like a V8. However, in the Falcons the engine configuration is a inline 6. This means all the pistons are set in a direct single row from front to back. Therefore the engine is referred to as an Inline 6 or I6 for short. The Holdens have a V6, where there are 2 banks of 3 pistons joined at the bottom in a V confuguration.
If you get a chance, pop the bonnet and have a look at the XR6. You will see the red Rocker cover and 6 leads going to the spark plugs of the 6 cylinders. As you will see each cylinder is directly behind the other. On a Commodore if you get a chance to see one there are 2 seperat cylinder heads (covering 3 cylinders each).

Hopefully this explains why we refer to the Falcon 6 cylinder cars as an I6 rather than a V6.

Its all good, everyone has to learn sometime. Anything else you want to know please feel free to post or PM me.

I hope everyone else in here realises that we all have to learn some time and it should be encouraged rather than laughed at.

Hey thanks Casper. Learning the way a Ford ticks is a whole new learning path! that makes so much sense. Is there more power with I6 rather than v6? and whats all this VCt and Intech???

Ok, power wise the Falcon I6 has, in general, had a greater kw output and Torque output than the corresponding Holden. The Holden has usually kept the 0-100 and ¼ edge by having slightly better gearing and a lighter weight…although this starting to even out.

As for the VCT/Intech/HP type of engines. There were, in the AU, 3 types of I6 engine. The standard Intech 6, as seen on the majority of Falcons. The HP, used only in the XR6 HP model….an uprated (improved head, more aggressive cam) version of the Intect6. Finally there was the VCT. Used in the XR6 VCT, the Fairmont Ghia and the Fairlane Ghia (and LTD I think), it was the most powerful of the stock I6 engines due to the VCT (Variable Cam Timing) in it. It is, also, the least understood and least modification supported engine of the 3 as there really isn’t any aftermarket cams to upgrade to. While being more powerful, all the VCT equipped cars were also fitted with the fantastic but very heavy IRS rear suspension. While improving the ride noticeably it also added enough weight to make the XR6 VCT slower (by about 0.3 of a second) than the XR6 HP.

So have you bought the car yet..
From experience the brakes are no good and the suspension is too high..

Best thing I did was put on DBA Slotted Rotors combined with some better pads that improved the braking significantly.. The suspension I waited until it was driving like a boat: ie the shocks were stuffed//

Koni Shocks, Super Low King Springs and it handles much better.. Could go low but you are going around the same height as the AU2&3 XR's, personal preference though, was tossing up the idea of SSL but the roads that Im mainly on are not really that good

Yeah I only have King Lows 32mm drop and suddenly the ride is a lot harsher. I also don't have IRS...

Slightly off topic, whats the verdict on braided brake lines for our cars. Are they worth it ? I was told the pedal feel would be better.

braided lines don't expand like normal brake lines, so theoretically there should be better braking and pedal feel

It's really hard to understand you know, why the AU was so maligned a car. I know the original Forte looked pretty off with the Baleen Whale Fish Grille and all, but I really like the lines of the other models. I often stare at the shape of my Au Futura Wagon and think, man that's a nice shape.

I guess it was too radical for the conservative Australian public.

Although i dont post that much i certainly go through the forums for advice etc. Casper your efforts have certainly put another person in an au II xr6. Being a p plater i'm into fast jap turbo's and the usual commodore. But after heaps of research and test driving i feel in love with the 01 AUII XR6 vct. what pushed me to really get it was your impressive quater mile times, help and mods that u have done on the car...Thanks a bunch mate!!!
