Default Looking for tips and advice in settung up for in car cameras..

Hi everyone,
Im looking for a few tips and pointers to shooting some decent in-car audio and video footage in both my cars.

Im currently limited to just using either my mobile phone, which isnt the safest option or setting up my digital still cam on a tripod.. I can get decent enough visual footage, but getting decent audio is where it all falls over terribly.
The camera Im using is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20. Its got sterio mics etc, but the recorded audio volume is pitiful.
I usually have it set up on a tri-pod inbetween the back seat and the front seats..
What Im looking for is pointers or tips from others who have messed around with this sorta stuff as to where the best places are to position it where I might get better or at least decent audio volume without having to jack the volume up 400% via vid editing software which also massivly amplifies all other ambient sounds.. Also, Id like to shoot some video from out the back of the car, to record the exhaust note, and Iv seen a few guys here mount the cam inbetween the bootlid and boot jamb..

Iv even tried to record sound from the exhaust, while the car is stationary and the audio volume is again pitiful. Iv tried a few diffrent positions to sit the cam and tried a few diffrent distances and heights etc without any success, so any tips there would be good too..

For the time being, I have to make the best out of the gear I have, so any ideas would be muchly appreciated.. Thanks.

Well for 1 thing, get an actual video camera. Your camera can take video, but it is not the primary function.

Thats not the kinda advice I was looking for. I am well aware of the cameras limitations.
As I said above, I have to make the best of what I have for now.. So Im still lookin for some "helpful" advice.

^^ Mmmm, Interesting concept. Not as expensive as I thought they'd be either.. I wonder how good the audio quality would be inside a car..
