Default Buying a car from another state?

hi guys,

I am in the market for a new car and cant help notice that cars in vic are generally dearer than those in say NSW.

what would be involved in change overs if I was to buy a car with rego from say NSW and then want to transfer it to vic plates?

what would the process be and what are the catches? can i buy it unregistered and get a permit to drive it accross the boarder and then go from scrath here which is generally easy?

any info would be appreciated

Regards
Jason

When I got my XR6 it had ACT plates and rego.

Was easy to get it changed over, car just had to have a roadworthy certificate. Walked into department of transport, handed in the ACT plates, paid for 12 months QLD rego, handed me some QLD plates over the counter, paid any other fees, and off I went.

thanks for that.

did it have to come with a RWC? do these all last for 28days as they do in vic?

when you say you went into the dept. of transport was that the QLD one?

how did you drive it from ACT to QLD, is there a permit you can buy?

thanks

You're allowed to drive cars registered in any state, to any state, you don't need a permit or anything. Just drive it over back to QLD.

but if you hand back the rego in the state its registered in, you get a refund for the remaining amount of rego
Did you get that when handing in the ACT plates in, in Qld?

Im in Victoria and bought a car from N.S.W, Vicroads need a R.W.C and then they do an inspection. Rego/R.W.C from another state means nothing to Vicroads for registration purposes they told me.

It's a requirement in QLD to sell a car with RWC. So yeah, it had to come with a RWC.

Yep, it was DOT QLD.

I didn't get any refund of existing rego when I swapped over, nor did they check my car in anyway. Just looked at the RWC and other docs, handed in plates and I was on my merry way!

Your best bet would be to call Vic DOT and ask them what the requirements are.

I know someown that just bought a car from NSW
had 9months Rego left on it
they got a refund of about $300 when rego was cancelled in NSW

They actually drove car to tassy on NSW plates, then sent the plates back to NSW dept, a cheque was sent to them
