So its like $4500 for an XR6 turbo engine or something, a weekend to fit it all up, a flash and an exhaust, an intercooler, all up $8000 and you have a mighty fast AU.

So that means I could have used a BA EGAS engine instead of getting myself another AU EGAS engine ... bugger.

How much would a conversion kit like this cost FTG? Would there be many issues with insuring it? And after doing it does it feel like it is actually worth doing? Does it make the AU feel more alive with the extra 28ish kw's?
I have thought about this over and over but always decide against it. This thread might just inspire myself and others to get off our bums and have a go e ..

motor is in and running, but we have run out of time at the moment
lots of good wrecks have been coming in and we are flat out on other things, we know now it can be done!!!!!! we will get back to this project soonish but if anyones interested in the conversion i would be more than happy to discuss what mods we made to get this sucker in . i will list a basic summary here sump is std BA wiring loom on engine is AU top on inlet manifold & throttle body is AU AU crank angle sensor wiring will plug onto BA C.A.S BA power steering hose requires a bend down the rack end then it will fit on AU a/c compressor can be mounted onto BA compressor mount but needs to be spaced forward slightly so the belt lines up. this can be done with some 25mm angle iron and some new bolts. AU water pipes can be fitted to BA motor with small mods AU coil pack and leeds AU engine mounts AU alternator AU knock sensor can be fitted to BA block AU oil & temp sensors can be fitted BA air intake AU accel cable needs a bracket for mounting AU exhaust fits up to BA manifold AU injectors fuel lines will plug straight on i would suggest an edit for the AU ecu , at this stage we cannot get the engine to run smooth at low revs. (but we needed more time really!!) i hope this help with anyone wanting to put one of these motors into a AU or earlier ford |

Very intertresting. Good effort to get this up & running.
Do you need to put heavier spring in the front to cope with the extra weight from the BA motor?

i'd be doubting there would be a HUGE weight difference between the two engines...but then again I havent lifted the head of a BA/BF variant

Very interesting. Good work guys, keep us all well informed. I reckon there might be a mass market for this for sure.

WHat would it cost to get a BA xr8 engine fitted ?
Would the rest of the AU car be able to handle to power output from the new engine ? Diff, springs, etc

the fact that the I6 BA engine is feasable is because it uses the same engine mounts. on top of which you would almost cretianly need a new bonnet as even the aftermarket vaients with the bulge in teh AU bonnet i doubt would have the clearnace.

(Boss Engine WONT fit.
they BARELY fit in BA engine bays as is.) I thought the au and ba were pretty much the same chassis/engine bay.

Hey All,
Just looking into this again, there is a problem with getting the AU PCM to use the VCT, wouldn't you be able to simply use an aftermarket ECU like a wolf 3D? |

The BA engine won't make anywhere near standard power with no VCT and good luck getting it to idle. As soon as there is oil pressure the pin in the phasers will release and there is no way to control them. You'd need to lock the phasers at 0 degrees and get some cams reground for non VCT or make up some vernier gears. The BA coils can be wired to work similar to AU coilpack easily enough.
Good to know it pretty much bolts straight in though.

The oil holes in the end of the cam would need to be sealed properly though. Also the BA cam position sensor could be used with AU comp, you'd just need to break 3 of the teeth off the trigger wheel.

This thread is great reading.
So far I would summarise as follows: 1. BA engines with many mods fits AU bay. 2. There are many issues to be sorted before the engine works well enough to justify the expense and effort. I do acknowledge though, that this setup could work out really well down the track. This project is still in its infancy. GK

The trigger wheel has 3 teeth on one side and 1 on the other, it should be the center one on the side with 3 teeth that you'd need to leave if that makes sense.

Still all sounding good though, despite the small issues, which are to be expected.
