Default New cameras on Monash Fwy??

Noticed the other day on both sides of the Monash Fwy near High st new cameras on a swing out boom. They are currently facing across the lanes and are around 30 meters apart. Im not sure if they are speed cameras or plate recognition cameras. If they are speed cameras why 2 sets 30 meters apart and how stable would they be to give an accurate reading.

They could just be traffic cameras, not speed cameras. I'd have to check them out next time I drive past there.

Could they be height detection units?

Theres 4 cameras so one for each lane. Height detection normally one and not on a swing out boom.

Yep, confirmed by a mate of mine who drives a city link response van; cameras have been set up outbound after high st where it goes from 80-100km/h.

That's so dodgy..so many people accelerate up to 100 just before the bridge, will end up catching a lot of people out. I wonder how many accidents have occurred at the very point of the road as a result of excess speed to warrant the need for cameras there? My guess would be not many.

If by not many you mean none, then yes, I agree.

Tell me again how this install is for safety purposes Mr Govco...

Those cameras will rake in a ton of money.

I'd like to see the accident stats for that location. Apparently every 5km/h over doubles your risk of having an accident.

Will have to make sure to remember them.

Ok so its been confirmed they are speed cameras. But the setup is bizzare. 2 sets 30 meters apart and on booms which swing out and appear to be too low for trucks, so they may also raise. Im worried about accurate readings as its not a fixed setup like a gantry and may move when trucks pass under resulting in false readings. Maybe thats why the 2 sets to verify each other. If thats the case which one would be correct??

Would it be logical to say as people become more attuned to camera's and changed their driving habits and the revenue is dropping, so therefore the revenuers need to install more cameras for those that accidentally stray a few k`s over the limit to bring the booty back up??

Of course they're revenue raisers. Some of those camera's cost 100K a pop. Money that could be better spent on other things. Just watch your speed and let the government **** their money up the wall!

Thats going to catch almost everybody out.....traffic around there (espdcially middle of the day) speed up to 100 just before the high street exit. Will pay for itself within the first 2 days.

As for its operation where everyone is accelerating to the new speed limit, I wonder how many accidents it will cause when one suddenly jams its brakes on when it sees the camera.

A new pole is set to be erected on the Monash Freeway near Karana Place in Glen Iris. This large pole is the site for a new road safety camera, which will be up and running soon.

The pole that this camera is mounted on isn’t the usual kind we have in Victoria though. It’s a mechanism that’s the first of its kind in Australia, and it’s come all the way from England.

This new type of pole (a ‘Crown VMC Pole’) is an achievement in safety and efficiency. The pole has a mechanism that means it can be wound back from the road when the camera is undergoing maintenance.

This ability to wind back from the road means that traffic won’t need to be disrupted for routine maintenance, and normal traffic flow can continue. It’s also safer for camera maintenance workers, who will no longer need to work up high, as the camera can be brought down to a workable level.

Keep an eye out for this new structure on the Monash, as it’s the first site that doesn’t require working at heights, and we hope to see more of them.

It was made in England because no where in Australia can weld or it was pulled down in England because it was faulty??!!

Just had a look at the site that makes these poles and nothing is mentioned about fixing speed cameras. Just about everything else is attached like ANPR's (automatic number plate recognition) cameras.

http://www.crown-international.co.uk/products/vmc-pole/

They say it can withstand loads up to 51m/s or 183km/h until it fails. So i guess winds at even 80km/h it will move substantially.

Can see this being another Wellington Rd overpass camera but it tested FINE!!

It does say about traffic enforcement equipment, which would include speed cameras:

Quote:
Designed to fulfil a number of functions the VMC Pole™ is currently used for mounting VMS (variable message sign) equipment as well as traffic monitoring and enforcement equipment over highways.

Agreed, there would be a certain amount of deflection or movement in winds, or caused by trucks, so hopefully they would be checking one reading against the other, and if they don't correspond then they ignore both readings. But what if they correspond but are both wrong? Or have they got something else in mind?

Drove past it the other day. It isn't actually on the High St bridge, but further down the road, after the 100 sign. It's there to stop people from flooring it when the limit changes and going up to 120 or whatever.
