backyard hill climb a drift track (4 the kids of course)

it all started with a mate showing off in his f250 4wd pushing trees over and my 16yr old wanting to learn to drive.with 3 hilly bush acres out the back the track was marked through the scrub.
a bobcat and a few jds later a ruff and bumpy track was formed and a $200 fwd corolla was first up,16 yr old had a few goes and thought it was all too easy ,and went back to her mirror took a few selfies and raced to get back on facebook,incase she missed something
in comes the 11 year old daughter ,a few tears and some the slowest driving ive seen up the driveway,she grew in confidence quite quikly
next the hunt was on for a rwd car ,a manual ke70 with no exhaust was next up

cant get the young one out of her little rolla now ,she has grown into a safe and confident little driver and can be found at the front gate most days waiting for me to bring sum more fuel ,then her and the dog are off for a cruise

The joys of havin a few acres to play in.... good for them to get a bit of confidence too, they may want to get semi-professional hopefully as they grow up! Nothing like a bit of track work in the dirt... just keep an eye on them and make sure they belt up and wear a helmut!

buy a couple of harness's,mate did same thing and his 14 year old with mate in car rolled his corona going to fast and both had lots of bumps and bruises and one broken arm,great fun that can go horribly wrong real quick,take care

the young one is very safe and cautious,its not a real high speed track.but
helmets are a must
,she sticks to her fwd,the ke is for mum and dad
i maybe should of put this in the projects as its an on going thing with mor mods for the track and maybe some more cars

Love tracks on private land. Echo the sentiments that a harness is a must, was up at nuriootpa at a mates block in the back of a laser, drunk and loving it, a 16 year old driving. Came over a crest too fast, lost it into a tree, and I got a fractured cheek bone for it.
Moral: wear a harness!

she has her eyes on a buggy 150-250cc not sure how safe these are compared to a car,

They're reasonably safe, but you'd be better off with a car and welding in a cage and attaching a harness.
We had more fun than ever in a crappy ford laser with the rear tyres slashed out. Pretty much slid around ever corner, was only an auto but was the best fun I'd had in years.
If you wack a cage in an old laser it'll only cost you time and a few bucks for some steel tube and the welding wire. the harness' you can get from anywhere, and they're better than a seatbelt should the kids roll one of the cars.

Also, a little tip, try and pick up several of the same car. My mate Tim has a block somewhere south and he has all corollas of early 90's vintage. That way if something breaks he has about 4 parts cars.
Personal Pick from me would be Carby Ford Lasers. Cheap as to buy and you can get unreg'd ones for next to nothing. they are easy to fix and run forever. Also try to avoid KE70's, they are getting harder and harder to find :( hahahaha.
RWD options I'd go with Geminis, they are cheap and plentiful and again easy to fix and run forever. lock the diff and off you go.

That's awesome. When I was 13 we had 20 acres and dad bought me a couple of beat up escorts. I'd drive them til I ran out of fuel. Best fun ever!!!

You're a pretty cool dad, nice going.

Your daughter will be a far better driver as a result of your effort to educate her about car control this early in life. She will no doubt learn from a few mistakes as her confidence grows on the track and with the car, better this happens on your land than on a public road. Plus, no doubt she will become self sufficient at repairing and maintaining her 'race car'

I have a 9 month old boy, and we're already eying off go karts.. Hahaha, but me thinks mum can tell I'm going to be living my dreams and aspirations through my son, the next formula one champ in the making

Looks like a good little track you have going. I got my first paddock basher when I was 11 (1976 Corolla lol). Now im older we still havent changed and have had countless paddock bashers out at our mates property. We get all the younger guys and girl out there driving and eventually doing our drift track. It provides hours of non stop fun. We even had the local police helicopter come down to watch while they were doing their rounds. Drifting under a helicopter while its just over your head is very different.

All I can say is to ensure the kids wear seatbelts. The helmet idea is good as well. So far we have had a few decent accidents happen:
- Car full with a girl who said she could drive was the worst, lost control of the EF, went through a fence and flipped the car upside down into the river bed beside the paddock. The result was hospital trips via ambo and helicopter, bruised bones, cuts and one broken and dislocated knee.
- Hyundai Excel head on in the wet into a tree stump. The result one stuffed car and my little brothers head imprinted into the windscreen.
- VR commodore through a fence and sideswiped a fallen tree.
- Another corolla rolled.
- Rolled a 6inch lifted hilux on 35's which resulted in a mate having a broken collar bone and I got a fractured sternum.

Have been plenty of other little mishaps but its all a learning curve. We are now a lot more cautious about whos driving and how they drive..

sounds like high speed and driving beyond the track had a lot to do with these crashes
hard to get any speed on my track as the ke70 spins all the way to the top its about fun not whos the fastest

Yeah inexperience was the main factor. Us regulars who are use to it havent had any accidents. Its always people not use to driving in the paddocks and bush trails. Our main "drift" track is all flat ground with no trees or anything to hit.

I'll post up a few pics and videos if you dont mind me posting them on your thread.

did u use anything to smooth and flatten yours out?up the top its so fresh and soft theres no traction at all,i guess its just gunna take time and lap after lap after lap

The problem is, because it's private land you can get drunk and do it without legal repurcussions, which is what I did at 19 with my other mates. Yeah it's fun and all but it makes you do stupid things. I drank 15 wood stock cola cans then hit the track, yes stupid I know but the best time of my life. Should have done it sober though.....
Ended up totaling three cars, broken cheek bone, bruises and cuts and 1200 out of pocket for the cars :(

lol nothing like a couple of cans to make u stay on the gas longer and brake later

Nah we didnt use anything to smooth out the track. It was all flat grass and I put out a heap of tyres to make up a track. Eventually over time it has turned to loose dirt and you can now connect majority of the track in one big drift.

A corolla that never died and copped an absolute flogging.. Was rolled and put back on its wheels and never missed a beat.. Mates had the smart idea of cutting the roof off it and it was driven like that for months until one day finally falling apart..
