I didnt say I dont like old cars, I do very much as I own a few of them and they are great. But the definition of an old car by some in this thread seems to be stretching a very long bow.

hailing a car from the 60s or 70s is a little bit like being envious of a caveman. Wobbly handling, no air cond, slow, lucky if it has a fm radio. Simplicity in life is one thing but the caveman wasnt better off either.

For a car, let it be a ford 6 or 8, you would be lucky to see 250000-300000km before it falls to bits or needs major reconditioning. (Log books usually stop at these km) At this point, it's beyond old, it's near expired.

I generally make a point of leaving people to their own stupidity but I'm going to make an exception in your case because there is not a single element of logical thought in the verbal diarrhoea quoted above.

By your definition, a 40 year old car with 50,000 miles (80,000 km for your generation) on the clock isn't old while a 2 year old 210,000 km one is not only old but a year away (at the same rate) of being expired.

Just do us a favour before your membership joins a 300,000 km car and expires - take 10 seconds to filter the idiocy that first pops into your head through a sanity check before regurgitating it onto the page.

If its classics driven on the weekends, then that is an individual thing, whilst I respect people who own/restore them, they aren't my cup of tea anymore.

I've owned new and don't see the big deal, they are only new until you get home, then you've used it.

For me its things like purchase cost and maintenance.

I predominantly drive cars that I can fix when necessary, it saves on labour.
Sure, a new car has warranty, but it comes at the cost of dealer servicing.

I can also double my money on old cars, you cant buy a new car for 40k and sell it a week later for 80k.

I recently bought an old 96 Lancer Coupe for $900 from a car yard.
The seats were feral, the bumpers covered in pressure can paint, the carpet was torn, the paint flat, a buckled alloy, front left guard dented and a few minor scratches on the left rear qtr.
I bought it for its reconditioned head, cold AC and 3 months rego.

I bought a guard for $49, an as new carpet for $30, had a mate re roll the rim for $40, shampooed the seats with my VAX, wet rubbed the bars with 2000, buffed the whole lot and added some decals to hide the few scratches.

I could sell it tomorrow for $2k but I wouldn't because it returns 600k's from $40 combined and I know I will never lose anymore than the $1k it owes me.

Apart from any of that, it gave me something to tinker with for a week.

A new car worth 40k will lose 10x the cost of my Lancer in its first 12 months.

It all depends on the car and the mod
Changing the charicteristics may improve handling etc but then its not a classic in the true sence of the word

I wouldn't want to drop in an AU engine and rack & pinion steering in my classic XB coupe

you see it doesn't matter that it handles like a pig ( and it does) what it does do is instanltly take me back to 1979 back to my youth and back to all those memories every time I jump in it and that's why I still own it 35 years on

everyone loves a good hulk thread. Im always the first invited to any bbq to stimulate some discussion/debate. Otherwise the crowd are just standing around staring into space. As long as everyone sees it in the right spirit.

anyhow this is my choice to go to work this morning, take the new car with 1600km and just steer or the old au with 158000km for a very different, interesting but equally enjoyable drive (my turbo ford is only for weekend)

There is no way I would call my au an old car when I had it, I would just "steer" it, drove pretty much the same as my ba not to mention my ba drives pretty much like the fg falcons I have been in. But drive something from the 70s and there is a big difference.

A 10 minute drive got me hooked!

Theres nothing quite like wrestling my Austin Mini through corners and coming out of the car smelling like fuel/oil.......very caveman like.....but lucky for me, my mini has aircon, is fuel injected, has an FM radio and has front disc brakes, so it does have some modern comforts.

At the end of the day, its pretty had to explain, but for me, its the passion that drives me to continually drive and maintain my mini and no ones going to take that away from me.

People can say its a rust bucket, its wobbly, its old, its a death trap, steering wheel position is like a bus and seating is awkward, but that fire in my belly (passion)....will never die......i love my mini and im sure its the same for any owner of any classic car. Its no longer about getting from A to B, its so, so much more than that.
