The car was passed in at $430K.

Unfortunately, the value of these cars is dictated by how much anyone is willing to pay to own one. The guys who had one as a young bloke and wanted to own one again when they were cashed up are probably too old to buy and drive one now.

The cashed up middle aged blokes today are probably looking at different dream cars now.

Very brave or the other alternative for passing in at $430k. I think perhaps the halcyon days of million dollar or thereabouts GTHO's maybe gone. Who knows in years to come select E series and B series may ignite the collector urge in future generations based on the same emotions that got the GTHO to its lofty status.

This always makes for an interesting topic.

Another case was quite interesting:

In February 2008, a GTHO referred to as "The Silver Ghost" reached $730k at auction, and was knocked back.

Quote:
Brisbane owners Darren and Sheree Ross said although the bid was a record for the model, it failed to match the value it should in the niche market of classic Australian muscle cars.

"That car is worth every dollar bid here today and then some," Mr Ross said.

Then what appeared to be the exact same car ("The Silver Ghost") was then for sale in 2010 at 'Australian Muscle Car Sales' for $525k

Haha, great way to blow $200k.

I think this bloke might have made the same mistake.

Greedy.

Isn't this the car that popped the bubble, bloke reckoned it would crack the 1 million dollar mark and was all over the media spruiking it, was passed in at 730k and later sold for half of his expectations?

'The castle' came to mind at the time...

I feel collectable car punters are starting to realise it is better to invest in a car with a more global appeal rather than an icon only admired by a limited audience down under for the longer term.

I recall an applicable old-school management phrase from back in the day: "Sometimes the first offer is the best one".

here here Mick. the trim in this nugget looks quite good in the pics as does the paint. id be taking the engine out and carefully cleaning engine bay and undercarriage. then the fun of finding parts of unobtainium begins if you were to bring the old girl back to concourse. otherwise stick a hotty in there leave the X numbered block in the corner and enjoy.

I just drive the ph2 around with 12 slots so it just looks like a mundane xwgt until someone recognises the sound of solid lifters

Ha, Ha, Ha........a few weeks ago I drove a Ph3 that had been layed up for maybe 25 years around the block with the wife in the passenger seat. First question from wife, what's that noise? My reply was flat spots in the tyres. They are original aquajet tyres. Next question from wife, what's that light on the dash? My reply the brake fail light darling. Next question from wife, will the brakes work at the end of the street? My reply, we'll find out. Priceless.

Cheers Mick

First thoughts are that it must have smelt terrible to be layed up for 25yrs with the Wife in the passenger seat.
But I once knew a hermit who lived with his mother, she died at the kitchen table and he piled up old news papers on her for years, when they discovered her she was beyond smelling so I assume the old XY was bearable by now........

At the moment good warts and all original parts, unrestored is where the big money is for cars like this............unfortunately many restored cars invariably have too many issues that often hold them back.

You think the classic old school dream Australian Ford to own , you say out loud
1971 Phase 3 GTHO. From day one three hundred were cars designed to race that anyone with the dosh could buy , register and drive on the public road.
Times were sure different then .
.

On the other end of the scale, there is good value with the 90s / early 2000s cars. Just when it seems no one wants them and they aren't worth anything, that's the time to strike.

There is always somebody prepared to pay your price. Something is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay on the day. Every collectable goes through good & bad periods. In my opinion, a true collectable GT will always hold value & appeal but if I was buying as an investment, I would consider a collectable Ferrari etc over a local product, simply as it is better strategy to buy a car with world wide appeal. I believe there will always be a demand for genuine muscle cars but whether or not the next generations do will be interesting to see. Cars have always held a fascination for man & true classics tend to rise to the top, but whether this includes a 6 cylinder XC Falcon as well as a GT-HO, only time will tell.
