You're dead right there Pedro.

Young Cassie/Dylan/Celeste/Tyler has to have the new XYZ GTi "because like it's really safe and stuff - and it's got like 5 star safety or whatever"

Then they drive off up the street in it as proud as punch whilst taking a selfie and uploading it to instagram . . .

On the other hand there are times when driver competency has no influence on the outcome - hence even F1 have safety features ... Surely F1 drivers are competent enough ?

Yeah you'd think so...but too bad these cars only crash when we are in them. And like has been covered in other threads a lot.....the very meaning of crash or specifically 'accident' sometimes means you often have no say in the matter!
Your tyre blows....sticks you into a pole....no chance!
Truck driver falls asleep and swerves straight into you...no chance!

If EVERYONE was the safest and a competent driver....maybe !
But on a really basic, simple level....being in a newer safer car surely is better then nothing I suppose!

The Hyundai might be the safest car to be in if you are having a collision with a stationary honeycomb aluminium block, however if you chose to have a head on with say a loaded up Ranger for example, weighing 3500kg you would not be in the safest car any more. The damage to both vehicles would be about the same but the G forces experienced by the driver of the lighter car would be nearly double .

Point taken but what I was alluding to is that an experienced driver who has done a defensive driving course and other driving enhancement courses like John Bowe driving school etc., will have the ability to avoid a lot (not all) crash situations.
Back in the 80's - 90's I used to drive around 80,000 kms per year and on average avoid around half a dozen serious situations every year. I instructed defensive driving courses back then and also high speed car control and it was due to my understanding that I was able to avoid potentially life threatening situations.
