The actual problem is these spare parts prices are sometimes marked up over 200%.
Most parts have over 50% markup on them. I suppose they make you pay it, because of the space it takes up, from other parts.
I just think it's an absolute rort the markup that goes into spare parts for cars (any type).

I bought the other day, front brake pads, bendix ultimates, quoted well over $200, got them for $170 and I still think they had me for lunch.
Standard brake pads (aftermarket), run at around 60-80 bucks, but to pay 4 times the price? I can understand some being double the price for the performance, fair enough, but 4 times?

If they can mark it down a huge heap, (i.e discount), then it had one helluva profit margin.

You guys ever wonder why you are getting NEW cars for $36,000.00? If parts were cheaper you would be paying $90,000.00 for a NEW Car.

BTW, Genuine spares have little or no profit margins, start looking at the after market parts, that is where the $$$$ are.

I call BS on both of those highlighted points.

Having spent a few years behind the parts counter - you would be suprised to see some of the real figures.

And as for those buying aftermarket.... what warranty does it come with?
Had a clown spit it over paying $150 for an EL 6cyl water pump one day... went down the road and got one for $60. - Great I said, lets see what happens in 4 months (it had a 6 month warranty on it)
First one failed two days after the warranty expired, so he bought another one - that gave in after 4 months - they gave him another one under warranty, but he had to buy more coolant. The replacement one failed after 2 months.

In 12 months, he had to fit 3 waterpumps - costing him time and about the same moeny as the gen part. He finally came in and picked up a gen one - 3 years later, when he sold the car, it was still running strong.

Moral - cheaper is not always better.

Try windscreen wipers for a Peugeot 307. Over $60 per side, so a shade under $130 a set.
They're the Bosch Aerotwins. To buy them from places like Supercheap cost $100 the set still. Found an alternative for $50.

BF silver doortrim inserts.... ~77 each for front door trims.... ~154 each for the rears.

I said to the guy I think I'll just paint mine. The guy at the counter even admitted their pricing was just insane.

On the otherhand I got a SR kit, the good ones, for $399. I thought that was a pretty good price.

Call around for different prices from different locations before buying the first one you see. I broke a tail light, I called one Ford dealer $98. So I call some junk yards.... $50 with a couple of scratches, the next one was $50 - then he said "No, $75". So then I try another Ford dealer for a new one, and it was $50. Half the price of the first Ford dealer! No prizes for guessing which one I went with.

BA - BF Center Cup Holder - $80

BA - BF Center Rim Cap - $22 each

BA - BF XR6 Boot Badge - $39 for one

Those are the prices of items I have purchased from Ford so far. I also enquired about Alloy Pedals for auto, was told $250.

I picked up a brand new set off ebay for $100

holden are no better.... i was working at suttons holden when the VN came out.
we had to make room for all the new parts that came with it. anyway when logging all the parts into the computer we worked out that to build a VN povo pack from spares would cost 1.2mil and that was the late 80s

by the way to make room for the VN parts they cleared out all the HT-HQ stuff and just dumped it at the tip

also with that thermostat housing... i have an NL 5.0ltr and bought a chrome one for an XT XW windsor and it bolted straight up for $25.
i did have to customize the top hose though

remember the round green automatic choke which was on the xf and earlier.
I thought I'd change it cause I was about to sell the car and I wanted it to start properly when I started it. Ford spares wanted $240.00 + gst.

so I went to the wreckers and he said go over there where all the carby's are, take whichever one you want ...$15.00

Anyway, work colleague had a Mazda tribute, end of 4 year lease, ready to sell.
aircon compressor dies! Mazda wants $3,000 for a replacement fitted.
Rang Ford and they fitted it for $1,500

go figure!
