not nice for xmas...its meant to be joyous, looks like for some their cars have been pelted. our home got pelted a while back broken windows tiles pots water saturated carpets. luckily my car was not home. done massive damage and to neighbours cars. i hope their is an easy fix. insurance is a safety net but to pay excess for this is cruel. nice car charles anyway...will be good

Drove down the calder shortly after, there was damaged cars all pulled over on the side and middle sections.

Not really. Remove front/rear windscreens, roof lining and some other interior trim pieces, cover everything inside the car (seats, dash..etc). Get out a drill with a spot welder remover drill bit, and take out all the factory spot welds (plenty down the rails and along the screens). Pry off the roof, then get a new roof from Ford, paint it, then it glues back onto the car, spot weld it all back in place, then paint any other bits. Or you can put the roof on and paint it once its all fitted.

PDR on the roof is easier if they remove the roof lining, otherwise they use a method where they use glue to pull them up. Ive seen this done on a Tornado ute and you could not tell at all, was very well done. But there is usually ways of seeing where they used to be, and sometimes we have to repaint the panels anyway!

they weren't as big there, but were about the size of pretty big marbles

im not sure but somewhere along the line i was told that new cars such as ford use thinner body panels to ease up on weight but they have tempered or hardened the steel that makes it more difficult to repair because if worked to much it may become brittle eg heated and such...not sure if this is true about the car steel panels of newer cars......?

You are right basteve, Ford use whats known as high strength steel (HSS) that doesn't like panel beating much. As you have mentioned, it becomes brittle when worked.

You were lucky as the March 2010 wrote 3 cars off damaged 66 cement tiles on my house roof plus water damage inside house. All sky lighting was peppered like a shot gun had been shot all over them. I got a bruise on my arm from a big hail stone as I was getting the dogs inside the house. I now have several large sponge mattresses to throw on cars that are not under cover which I did last night on my FG 50th but lucky no large hail fell in the East.

we were in Elsternwick when the storm hit and thankfully my car was parked next to the house

the hail was the size of a 20 cent piece

I am so glad that i chose to park where i did as i normally park on the front lawn so it would have copped it

I feel for you guys that have had damage hope you get the repairs done asap

HSS is oly used in core structural components such as pillars etc for the occupant protection cell. It is not used in superficial exterior panels.

Replacing a turret is not a big job on a FG, but is a pain in the **** on a BF or earlier as they don't have cant rails. FG + roof probably not a total loss, BF + roof will more than likely be a loss.

Those dents in the roof of the FG will just about PDR, this would be the best option. We call this 'push to paint' where the PDR tech will get it just about perfect but not quite good enough. We then prime, block and paint.

Geez the hail really did damaged i noticed in the for sale section j3t is selling bonnets and guards might be a easy fix just need a paint tho food for thought

had my coupe out in that hail ducked for cover at the local car wash until it passed rushed home as the wife's torana was under the car port went to put them in the garage found all the lazer lite roofing on the floor and all my other cars soaked. Temp repaired the garage roof then the next down poor came flooded the back roof of the house and dinted the ed all over but the old trusty xe which sat out the front in all 3 lots of hail we had not a dint on her yet the ed is a write off.

We where driving down the Tullamarine freeway last night returning home, the freeway was trashed, the storm hit really hard and there where a lot of trees which had fallen over, a few across the road, lots of big branches across the road also, all the trees where stripped of branches/snapped in half or fell over.

At home here in Country Vic, my next door neighbours tree fell over, a few of ours snapped off branches as well and we lost power for 5 hours.

Looks similar to hail damage my AU2 suffered in Jan 2011 - around 150 dents and all fixed by paintless dent removal.

I too copped it, mostly on the bonnet but a few on the roof :( was out at relos so my car was all alone.

Quotes at the moment will be 3x what they were two days ago. Wait a month or so and prices should be back to normal

Had a better look today, mines about the same as yours charles_ wif_xf, except you have scored many more on the bonnet. I have a big one on the RH side of the roof at the back like your big one at the back, should be able to remove, maybe need paint after, see how they go. For some reason my bonnet was not peppered so much, maybe the towels on it worked better than the rug on the roof. RH front and rear doors have a dent each along the strip section above the crease line just below the windows, as well as a few small dints in the C pillars. Can't see any on the front guards.

Regarding the thinner gauge of the bonnet skin, this is also to help pedestrians if they get in the way.

Rang up my insurer Shannons today and got my claim number. Nice guy I spoke to, normally you get a quote from your own repairer, but in this case because of the number of claims they have and the nature of repairs required, they are arranging for assessors at locations to go to in the next few days for assessment, and then have specialised pdr repairers you can go to for the work, or alternatively if you are confident your own repairer can handle the repairs you can go to them.

I spoke to the PDR guy that work use on the Fiesta. He said that dents in creased areas of a panel can't be removed using PDR methods.

PDR on a roof can vary lots, could be a few hundred right up to $1,500+ on a wagon, but still cheaper than putting a skin on.

If anyone getting a new car from Ford. May want to check for hail damage. The Broadmeadow's holding yard got hit hard. It was reported about 1500 plus cars damaged.

Ford wouldn't sell the cars to customers, they would be written off like any other insurance company and new vehicles will be replaced

Depends how badly damaged. A lot of cars get damaged at holding yards before going to sale, they just get fixed before going to the buyer.
