So we have had a WHO investigation in China. Despite it being a year too late and reports of it being heavily stage managed, do we have any better insight into what happened? Or did it all go the way we thought it would

As I have said previously, the initial response and lack of transparency from China may have allowed the virus to escape, individual countries have the responsibility to manage it within their borders and this is where many leaders have failed including Trump. You can **** and moan how it got there but it's on them to manage it once it is there.

While I think it is unwise to withdraw from the WHO in the middle of the pandemic, in defence of Trump it is a ****en joke how much the US contributes to WHO in comparison to China who have the second largest economy and still enjoy developing nation status. They take the **** every day.

All true. That being said if everyone in China was sick or dead it could have delayed the new iphone or galaxy. Trump really liked tweeting you know. Also seems the worlds economy depended in shipping food and ore to China and them shipping junk back to fill our shops.

End of the day the western world has got to tell China if you want to be a world player then play by the world rules. Of course we can't threaten them, we are too dependent on them for trade.

Before trade wars they didn't know what would happen so it tempered them a bit. Now they know they can thrive after trumps trade war and the west will still trade with them willingly. They have been strengthened, they have all the power now and they know it. Think of how you feel when you think of that. That's how the WHO felt went operating in China back then and now.

I can confirm it’s a photograph. :p About 20% of NSW COVID fatalities happened at the Newmarch House fiasco.

It’s worth noting that in Sydney at least, the popular mood has seemingly evolved; nine months ago the vibe was “trust nobody, even your neighbour could be carrying this”. Now people seem more focused on where actual risks might be.

Snap lock down should have occurred right from the beginning. But 13 over the course of several days is hardly to get your jollies over. This might make people think there was some sort of rort they were trying to keep off the headlines.

On that note, welcome to Victoria FairmontGS

Personally, I'll start getting twitchy if they start identifying unlinked cases, or cases outside of the "3rd circle".

In premiers we trust, but coronavirus crisis gives federal government ‘massive shot in the arm’

https://www.theage.com.au/politics/f...11-p571lx.html

"Victorians were more confident than the national average in their state government (72 per cent), having weathered the second wave of coronavirus cases, and had less confidence in the Commonwealth (51.5 per cent) than the general population.

In NSW, 55 per cent had faith in the federal government – slightly above the national average – compared with 68 per cent in Gladys Berejiklian’s government."

"Young people were less likely to have confidence in the federal government or police than the general population, while people born overseas had less confidence in the health system."

That's surprising regarding confidence in health systems. We have one of the best, maybe we don't gloat about it enough.

Data valid as at 00:00 GMT February 11th, 2021.

Note: As not all Australian States report at the same time, the data below is based on the previous full day reporting.

6 new cases for Australia and no deaths so the CMR is 3.148%.

0 new cases and no deaths for NZ so CMR is 1.076% and active cases 54.

The UK had 13,494 cases yesterday and 678 deaths.

Just over 97k new cases in the USA yesterday and 4,986 deaths sees CMR up to 1.734%. That's the fourth consecutive day under 100k cases. Note that the USA is actually minus one day due to time differences.

Other notable points:
Global cases pass 108M, the last 1M in 2 days;
North America passes 32M cases;
North America passes 700k deaths;
Europe passes 100 deaths per 100k of population;

No countries

... recorded new daily highs; those in blue for the second consecutive day and those in red for a third or more consecutive day.

Time for Daniel Andrews to step aside, and put someone in who has a clue how to manage quarantine. Cause the vic government operations are clearly useless. The fish rots at the head.

Funny how no other states continually need to lock down.

It (lockdown) will become a predictable black comedy routine for Victoria. Why not at least try cajoling the public to go for 120K of tests per this weekend in conjunction with self-enforced low exposure behaviour, and shape a response on the data?

I've been supportive of the last two lockdowns but this one seem a little too far reaching (being whole of State) and severe at Stage 4. Counting today, Victoria has had 10 cases in the last 7 days - half the number that NSW has recorded although quite a few of the Victorian ones are community transmission.

Having said that, it is what it is and presumably if case numbers don't get worse it will end next Wednesday so it more a minor disruption than anything major.

Still, it begs the question: is this our future COVID Normal?

It is a Stage 4 which basically means:

Only four reasons to leave your home: shopping for the things you need, care and care-giving, exercise and work, if it is essential. The 5km limit applies.

Exercise is limited to five kilometres from your home.

Face masks will need to be worn indoors and outdoors.

No visitors to your home. No public gatherings.

No school but child care and kindergartens remain open.

Gyms, pools, community centres, entertainment venues and libraries will close.

All non-essential retail will close - cafes and restaurants will only be able to offer take-away.

Hotel and accommodation providers will be able to stay open to support guests already staying but no new bookings can be made.

From an outsider’s point of view, Victoria seems a state governed in the last decade or more by ideas of restriction, punishment and revenue. The masses of Covid breach fines, a surfeit of hidden speed cameras, the seemingly permanent generation of a new branch of bureaucracy managing state entry passes… The new lockdown was no surprise but disappointing nonetheless.

Have to agree Russ, we live down the Peninsula, a long way from where these cases are, let alone the people living in rural towns.

I guess the problem is there's still Muppets driving from Sunbury to Arthurs' seat to watch the sunset.. etc regardless of what their told.
