i bought a 02 Turbo Diesel hilux about this time last year. I'm dead set spewing diesel went up about 30c/l since then, however my fuel economy over the year has worked out to just on 10L/100k's. Not bad for a older technology motor

Doing a comparison with my 3.4L petrol 4x4 and your 3.0L TD
Fairly same ute, weight.

My Petrol hilux gets me 18L per 100km.
your Diesel gets you 10L per 100km.

Your still on top even though diesel is 20-30c more a L.

The bigger the car, the disparity between diesel and petrol continually gets wider......

Interesting to note that though, real world consumption figures..... !

Diesel can often match or better their Australian standards tested consumption, Petrol will often never get near it.....

far out, i never knew the 3.4 was that bad! thank stars i didn't purchase one. Would get places faster than the diesel though, can't imagine what the old non turbo 2.8 or 3L diesels would have been like.

Anyone know what figures the modern big trucks get roughly?

i did a year at budget commercials about 2002 there was`nt much i did`nt drive including they`re car fleet ,most diesels they had were naturally aspirated though, depressingling slow :(, as far as longevity goes for little diesels i`m still a sceptic as to cost of small diesel ownership with servicing and repairs , well for long term anyway, you may be right if you went toe to toe cost wise with an lpg falcon 6 against a diesel equivelent for example for 600000 k`s there probably would`nt be much in it, i think i`d rather live with lpg engine though.
just a bit of trivia an 8v92 (an 11 litre 2 stroke)detroit diesel piston weighs 10 lb`s .....is that not incredible?
