It is a West Aussie invention in terms of its name:

But what about Anna Pavlova's stay at the Hotel Esplanade, Perth in 1929? Yes, it is true that the Hotel invented a dessert in her honour, but that recipe was not invented until 1935. On April 2, 1935 Herbert (Bert) Sachse found a recipe for 'Meringue Cake' in the Women’s Mirror Magazine (contributed by a New Zealander) and sought to improve it. The resulting recipe he called ‘Pavlova’. The sweet became a much enjoyed offering at the Hotel Esplanade high teas and won the hotel and Chef Sechse national acclaim.

Simplest way I've seen it explained yet.

From that article:

Why the dispute?

Australia and New Zealand have long been at battle over which country is ‘the best’, and any opportunity to claim an advantage is usually seized upon by eager patriots wanting to prove their nation’s superiority.
You only have to look at the migration stats for proof of that answer.
Very few go east over the ditch....

But back on topic, no, the Kiwis don't get better cars than Oz (unless boring econo-bubbles are what float your boat).

Migration has reversed.... More people went to nz last year than moved to here..

And if kiwis get pretty much all the cars available here, plus a lot that isn't available here then it's pretty safe to say nz probably does get better cars.

We pay so much more for falcodores though. A decent SV6 with less than 200k on the clock will set you back 10k and a similar falcon is even costlier (If your lucky enough to find one!). And don't get me started on petrol, the only reason we drive econobubbles over here is cause our petrol price peaked at 2.10 a litre, 2 dollars fricking 10!, even now we still pay about $1.60.

We do get a lot of nice jap imports though. Get 15-20k, head down to the NZ New importer, but yourself a mint condition used jap Subaru Legacy that's done about 50,000 k's. A mighty fine deal if you ask me.

Awesome car that, saw it down in Mt Maunganui at the all Ford day last year, if I remember correctly it has the engine from an ED Sprint, could be wrong but I think that's what it had

Amazing project car. Always wished to do the same between an ex-cab BA and an imported non-registrable R35 GTR.

Same as the sigma, Aus hipo model got the 2.6, admittedly not a bad motor for a big low tech donk, but other markets got the 4g63..

Where it worked well was IMO the British stuff, you guys got the 2.0l escorts, six cylinder cortinas etc.
And rightly so they are for our market.

I did not want the 2.0L at all, lucky they had the big block 2.4L, I don't want a turbo car.

You could have got one of these German VN commodores with 61KW 1.8 engine
at least it was rear wheel drive not like the SB's replacing the commdore in 2017

Amazing work. Is this a viable way of getting the body style one wants, while gaining the performance and handling of another vehicle ?

you guys should see a UK-built P12 Primera compared to a Jap-built one. The UK one feels like a 3-series in comparison. Their D40 Navaras have way more kit too. A lot of their lower-end vehicles are higher-specced to make them look competitive against Euro models.

Kia sold heaps of K2500 they actually get asked all the time whether or not its coming back. Unfortunately, kia commercial vehicles like the K2500 are skewed to south asian markets - so yeah ADR is an issue.

With regards to the Picanto- it had notjing to do with ADR. there were however lots of reasons why its only just arriving in Australia. Pricing, product mix, market conditions/politics (i20 out, picanto in - remember they are sister companies).

Jump on trademe to get an idea. I don't follow the jap stuff but I suppose the only decent imports out of Japan these days are a couple from Nissan, the 370gt coupe and the sedan it's based off, as well as the bigger v8 Nissan sedan which doesn't look too bad but I'd have a BMW 550i or MB e550 for a similar price.
The euro stuff out of Japan are mostly low spec models that no one buys on the new market. To appeal to people who can access a low km euro for the same price as a jappa, but only for the badge status and nothing else - low spec 118i, 320i, 520i BMW, e240 Mercedes etc. the high end euro stuff comes in cheap, w211 e55s are now $20k, e63 low 30s, e60 m5 low 30s, e90 m3 low 40s, but all have unknown history, most dealers don't convert the GPS over, and they have probably spent the first 70k km in traffic.

This article would have more relevance back in the day when the R34 GTR and GT-t was offered here new, as well as the BMW e39 530 diesel, e46 330d, Primera, Mondeo and sti Legacy all of which Oz never got.
