In regards to oversteer, the HP is a beautifully progressive power oversteerer. There's absolutely no lack of control; and if there is, it's because the guy behind the wheel is a knob who can't drive.

To be honest, I've found the HP more comfortable/progressive in oversteer than the IRS XR8. This again relates to that racetrack advantage that a HP has over the IRS XRs.

They way I look at it, the XR models complement each other. Each has different strengths and weaknesses. I think they complement each other well:

XR8 and XR6 VCT: Fun in the twisties where the surfaces are crap or wet.

XR6HP: Fun and faster than the VCT on the racetrack (and pretty much as quick as an XR8 even with the power and torque deficit).

Again, I like all three.

Dont get me wrong im sure the HP is a very capable car in the handling department , however no other live axle falcon I have driven (on the street i might add) has come close to an IRS falcon in terms of puting power down in certain situations and general rear end adheasiveness. From what ive been told the HP is fantastic on the track - i dont drive my car on the track (unfortunately) so i wouldnt know how the IRS AU compares in those situations.

Thats the major reason for me choosing a VCT over a HP. The power windows and 6 stacker etc dont excite me.I was sold on the cars balance and grip levels.

gee my torque figures are way off, must of confused the AU1 v8 with the vct

had an au1 hp auto, now have au2 vct man. I perfer the vct as it puts the power to the grnd so much better. Have had the vct on the track and handled the fast corners well as it also did powering out of slow corners.I cant say if the hp wasnt as good or even better as the hp was auto and the vct is man.

A mate of mine owns an AUIII XR6 VCT and we frequently go on runs together in search of country pubs to "sample" some ales.

All I can say is don't underestimate the XR6 VCT in straight line or twisty road performance. On a twisty road we basically break even, if anything the V8's ability to power down in straight sections gives it a slight advantage. In a straight line, if the XR6 catches me napping, it's only the top end of the V8 (and the lovely Windsor "roar") that allows me to catch up, usually at the borderline of the posted speed limit. If the HP is indeed faster, then AU V8's had better watch out...

I voted XR6 VCT because of the sheer enjoyment of driving with one, and combined with the IRS is a pretty mean setup for our country cruises.

Vct for me as anything with more power in stock form has got to be a good thing and they have the same reliability so its a no brainer for me.

i drove both when i got mine and did't feel any difference. I think i was more just so excited about getting a new XR it didn't really matter. So it ended up being a hp.
The feeling of knowing your driving the best car on the road and everyone is looking at it, unforgetable.

When I purhcased my AUII VCT. Early AUII times. The VCT was much better optioned.
It had IRS, LSD, 6 stacker, more power..
The IRS was / is a much better ride and stuck to the ground better. The VCT seemed to go better.
I was more than happy with it until I sold it for a BA XR6T....

Simple answer, have both in the family. There are good and bad things with both. Me, I'm the HP its that bit more raucious and although it needs more driver involvement around the twisties, you have to work the steering, set the corner approach up, brake at the right time, but when you do it rewards and flatters, in the sense that you did the work and was your effort.

Darky gets out his footage from the Meteorite AU having a hard time catching Strider up Victoria Pass! It's damn nice uphill twistied coming back from Bathurst. Mind you it was dead flat race track like surfacing that no doubt would've made for some beautiful performance exhibited by the XR6 HP that day.

I had a XR6VCT ute (hence the name)but I didnt really like its torque compared to my EL xr6,and parents au xr6 both these car would have distroyed my ute off the mark.

I was going to fit a hp engine in my wagon,but decided to mod this "intec"engine and see what I can get out of it with a cam,extractors,3.45 lsd,chip and dyno maybe down the track

I still see my VCT as the only reason why I am in a Territory at the moment. If I had received a bad run with that car (and the engine, which was the precursor to the BA 182) I would be in a X5, paying for it for the next 8 years. My VCT is still the best Ford I have ever owned. It was quick, powerful (never had a problem towing my boat, even as a T5), and my Wife liked it, when she could understand that the clutch had to be fully removed before accelerating again, which to this day she can't understand.

I had no qualms with my XR6. It was not slow, ok, you couldn't modify it, but it was my company car. I couldn't modify it. The note change between 3 and 4 K RPM brought a smile to my face every time I went through it, and a tear to my eye on the last day - I thrashed the living crap out of the car in the last week. The engine had character, which the Territory does not.

Casper, you and I are a rare breed. I choose my VCT because it was the 'top' XR6. I wanted the new engine, and I also wanted the resale value at the end of the three years, when Ford took the car back off me.

Long live the VCT.

Well, to my utmost surprise, I am starting to think we are not so rare afterall. I cant begin to say how stunned I am at the poll so far. Anyone who doesnt think there has been a major shift in opinion on the VCT really wasnt taking notice of how much it was generally looked down on around mid 2003. Looking at it now, seems it had gone from the ugly duckling of the AU range to a bit of a swan.

Truth is that, at this point, the HP is still the more "powerful" car in full modded specs but seems the VCT has other attributes people seem to place higher (such as the IRS).

i bought mine jan this year (vctau2) i had not driven an xr6 before that, i had 3 v8s before it , the first test drive i fell in love with the six, and it has not missed a beat in that time, it does seem the faster it goes the better it drives ,i would love to give it a squirt at track one day. vct for me
