It’s like buying old stamps and a million other quirky things, if you can afford and it turns you on, why not.

I have seen a few very cool number plates on cars here over in NZ. Have see both [FORD] and [FALCON] on cars over here, which I imagine would sell for bucket loads if they were for sale. I recall seeing the plate [MAORI] for sale for $50,000 recently too

I was blown away to see two cars on the highway, plate number 1 said TIM, a car a bit further up the road had TAM. Not sure if they where related or if this was the worlds biggest coincidence.
Pity law says no phone use whilst driving, this was a case where a photo was warranted.

Why if you hold the rego/papers for them you can get them reprinted from theft.

My wife works at a real posh school.

Believe me when I say 100k is 'loose change' for some families.

Good luck to them.

Cool Re: Why do people spend 100k on number plates?

Hi all
like red hot said about Steffan he bought Q no 1 back in 1985 for 100k
he fitted it to his Porche
and sent it up to Mackay for his hair dressing salon by train
but when it got there some one had helped themselves to plate
QLD rego in those days only had a rear plate none for the front
I remember the hype $100000 for Q 1
front page news with Steffan and Joh
so $125k after nearly 30 years thats not bad value
thanks John

Yep - anyone who makes / has a ton of money must be doing it illegally, obviously.

Same could be said for someone spending 50K on a car, it's all relative. But in the instances of rare number plates, they are a appreciating asset and useable at the same time.

Not in NSW you cant. Reason being is that whoever stole your plates could use them, rack up some fines, commit a crime etc, and you would get the blame.... since you have the same plates!
