Yep.

There have been project car give-aways and then there have been cars that
were already built and given away.

I believe some of these have been:

- Yella Terra Monaro (as already stated)
- Another Monaro, A HT GTS. (may have been green w/gold stripes)
- IIRC, they once gave away a Phase III!
- A late '70s Corvette with wild graphics (given away at Summernats)
I have the feeling that this car was also used in Running On Empty. (The car Deborah Conway drove)
- Howard Astill's "ROCK4" 1963 Ford "Compact" Fairlane.

This has really got me thinking now...

They also gave away a bathurst torana not used at bathurst, that is a lightened shell produced as a spare and never used in anger. they built it up and gave it away.

In the design drawings for the castrol coupe they used an arcadipane monza front, also known as the mad max nose.

ive often toyed with the idea of painting my coupe as the castrol coupe, but using the arcadipane nose.

HQFORU has been restored

the bathurst torana had something like 39km on it. there was another XY, can't remember what name they gave it.. aqua-ish in colour with purple, blue green and red wavey graphics, and a colour coded grille. there's been heaps of cars over the years..

Pffft, what paint job. The graphics were vinyl stickers :
Just like how FPV do it today

The suspension was just off-the-shelf K-Mac items and I always thought it needed bigger rubber. Those weedy 16" Simmons rims were too small even back then.

Still be good to see it again today though

This was one of the first issues of SM that I drooled over as a young fella. I still have every copy that I ever bought including this one tucked away in the garage.

I used to own this car back in the day.
I purchased it from Daryl Greaham in NSW.
He had won the car in the competition.
It was a great car and I used it in some club sprints at Calder,Winton and Sandown.
It handled really good for such a big car.
I sold it in 1989/90 to a guy in QLD and have not seen or heard of it since.
This car was responsible for me doing racing.I got my racing licence in it at Sandown and now I race an old Touring car in Group C/A Historics.
It would be great to hear from the owner at some stage.

This was the car that first got me into coupes.
I was only 15 at the time, put in quite a few entries to no avail.
My mates werent impressed when they checked out their mags and noticed the entry page missing

Did you change anything to how it was given away?

Could you post some pics of it when you owned her.

Cheers Jack

I cracked the engine block at Sandown and went to Mick Webb for help.
He said it was common on engines with 40thou over.
He had a Nascar block that was an old Allan Moffat block in his workshop and I did a deal to rebuild the engine using the other components from the original engine.
I rust proofed the entire car and once I ran the car with a side exit racing exhaust and some racing slicks bought from Les Small.
When I sold the car it was as it was built but with the Nascar engine block.
When I bought this car I was only 18 years old.
Not a bad car for a young bloke hey.
I remember how great it handled.
You could hang the tail out in the wet or dry and the car would never bite.
I remember beating the Peter Janson A9x at a Calder night sprint with ease.
What a great car.
Will post some pics soon.

The rims were 9.25" from memory, and the tyres were 245/45/16, I think.
So the rims were big enough, just needed 295 tyres.

I also entered for this. Would sure be nice to see the beast today.

I remember this car well.. My mate was the one who filled out the entry coupon.. He was about 13 at the time and lived 2 doors up.. I remember goin to his house in the morning to walk to school and he told me they just had a phone call telling them they won it so no school for him that day..lol.. 2 days later it was sitting in there garage in a housing commision house in rosemeadow campbelltown..Well out of place i tell ya and it was only there for two nights or so before they stored it and then his dad sold it so they could all move to perth.. I bet he wished he had kept it now..
