In these modern times of computers and internet it is very hard (impossible) for monthly hard copy magazines to be up to date with the rumour. No doubt the staff at these magazines do surf forums like ours and snip pieces of info to publish in their magazine. No different really than what a lot of people on this forum (and others) do. Lots of people find interesting motoring stories in other forums or online motoring magazine such as drive.com.au. Technically we are worse than Wheels or Motor because we may be infringing copyright where as the magazines are generally just copying rumours and spy pics posted by indviduals (no copyright).

Wheel is utter garbage, and why people read it is beyond me, it's exaclty what you have said, "speculative" yet they will advertise that they have as "exclusive power figures" and all the other rubbish. Exactly what they did when a while back when they had what they claimed were exclusive photos of the new VE Commodore, and all it turned out to be was a computer generated image (CGI) of what they "THOUGHT" the new Commodore would look like, and as it turned out it was not close at all what the actual VE Commodore looked like, even the so called "exclusive new Orion pictures" which yet again where CGI images of what they "THOUGHT" the Orion would look like, and it didn't look like it now we have the pictures first seen in the Herald Sun.

Why people hold this magazine with such high regards is beyond me.

Wheels where just ****ed they didn't get these images of Orion, and the Cars Guide got them, so Wheels quickly pubslished on their site that they had the power figures....losers....

It seriously would not at all suprise me if half there information is gathered from forums as someone said, which would be all speculative.

Those power figures will not be the GT would have close to 310kw one would think, but we will wait and see.

People can still comment on a thread that is on a public forum after all! Who needs to get over the fact that a lot of people think it's trash? sunshine?

Hey I enjoy reading Wheels too I just want to believe what I read.

When we had the Orion thread earlier and everyone was speculating how the GT was going to make more power I made the suggestion that they could increase the rev range and make more power at higher RPM to which I was told quite bluntly that it was impossible and the stroke on the BOSS was waaaaaay too long. Wheels says it and everyone goes nuts.

I would also like to point out that during the BA development days they were easily making 320kw in the BOSS but the torque was very unimpressive so they pegged it back to 290kw and fattened the torque curve.

I often buy Wheels and Motor magazine as they are a interesting read but I want to know if I can believe what they say.

I remember when the GT was released it was considered PERFECT by Wheels now they consider it so crap they don't even bother testing it. Same as the XR6 Turbo read the first review back then the only downside was a "whooshy engine note" now it has a "meaty engine note" but a million other problems with it.

I'm confused.

Like Martin Donnan, aka Street Tuner. I think you'll find he's responsible for the Aug Wheels article about the '08 Falcon.

Wheels go a bit overboard with Ford and Holden when either brings out a new model. Remember they went completely insane when the BA was to and eventually was released. You'd be spewin' if you weren't into Ford or Holden.

Wheels, like many other high volume mags is so much more than just two Australian marques. But it is smart enough to understand a great deal of it's readers (young males with disposable income) still get off on the latest Ford Holden etc.. Hence the front page hoo ha.

Same here, I stopped buying it along time ago for the same reason. Now, I have to thoroughly check it and see if its worth buying...

If you don't like it, don't buy it.

I don't think there's bias in either Motor or Wheels... but what they do is beat up alot of drama to keep this Ford V Holden thing alive. That way it gives us (the gullible people we are) something to look forward to in the next issue or comparo... its just a game to them, and we buy the comparo's (especially when our brand wins the comparo) to watch the two clans take battle. Thats what we like so thats what they give us. They're in the business to sell and at the same time feed our hunger for more Holden/Ford bashing.

When Orions released and Wheels/Motor tell us how great the new Falcon is, alot of us will be eating our words.... and buying their magazines.

The current copy of wheels is the first i've bought in a few years, not because i dont like it (though i did always like motor more) but because i'm just not as interested as i used to be.
I see them both as being the same kind of thing as an internet forum, only in magazine form. There is always going to be stories that are a purely speculative and most of what you read is going to be someones personal idea. To me they are just a little bit of entertainment and as i can get the same thing on here and other forums i don't bother buying them anymore.
If you need more accurate details than is currently available on the orion or any other car that isn't available yet the only way is to wait for it to be released. Until then the best we are going to get is what you read on here and in magazines etc...

and yes, i do think they throw out some pretty wild ideas masquerading as facts.

..all this was before pic's at the tip and the Sun Herald Cars Guide release so it may well be as others have stated very close to the mark!! :hihi:

hey, dont knock the P76 mate...
the best, unbiased opinion of them, including the good AND bad points, was in Australian Muscle Car issue 5.
they really were very advanced in their day, and were very good once the bugs were ironed out, but that was the prob... ironing out the bugs, and it wasnt 1 major thing that let it down, just a series of silly little things that seemed to take ages to get right, which ended up killing it.
anyway, i digress...

IMHO, we all know most of the wheels/motor type mags are full of it.
if u want to read it, then feel free, and if u dont, then dont. simple.

personally, wouldnt waste my time or money on any of them.
just full of hear say, rumours, and what individual 'reporters' think, so what 1 story says when written by 1 person will say something completly different when written by another.

is wheels full of shite, or is ford? motor magazine recently tested fords and holdens on dynos. xr6 quoted at 245kw, was calculated at 230kw average on 3 dyno runs. same as a couple other models were done on official power quotes. whiles holdens quotes proved conservative. 270kw official quote ended up being about 290kw in the magazines tests.

and the P76, it was for the v8 model. the car of the year is an interesting choice always. a real winner would be a merc, or ferrari or rolls royce, but you shouldnt look too deep into their winners. and its only applicable to the year it won the award. the p76 v8 was a good car in the year it was released. so was a magna when it won the award in the 80s... but they should consider longetivity, a magna is a heap of shite and doesnt last long, wheels should have know that as it was still using the rubbish astron motor.

Um I have that issue and the Holden results varied just as much as the Ford results.

I think it was that the Force 8 was around 282kw while the Force 6 was over at something like 275kw.

I think the SS was over at about 280kw while the GTS was significantly under.

I wouldn't read too much into it though from what I have heard from mates who have modified BA's the computer is a bastard and randomly decides to scale back engine power and I assume the Holdens are the same.

Also I remember 2 years back Motor had a "300kw" GT that beat the supposed 297kw Clubsport on the Dyno. But the supposed 280kw Force 8 ran a better quarter mile time than the 300kw read into that what you want.

I also remember reading an article about Holdens Ecotec V6 where from the factory the engine (in the VS) put anywhere from 120-150kw due to crappy tolerances.

I think it is really hard to tell what a car REALLY puts out thus the phenomenon of freak cars.

Yeah well call them silly little things if you like but there was a lot of major things too. Plus the fact that they are as ugly as sin.. Considering every magazine canned Ford when the Au was launched, mainly because of it's looks I think that is a valid point!
