my mate has an EF XR8 and he was driving it the other day when the engine started knocking, we lifted the bonnet and listened and it sounds like it's comeing from the drivers side rocker cover, could it be a broken valve spring or rocker or maybe a collapsed lifter, has anyone had this happen before, the knock is a lot worse under load. it almost sounds like a tractor when he revs it.

lifters are in the heart of the engine so it probably wont be that....
i'd be looking at a valvespring..... not overly hard to remove the rocker covers on them, i'd lift it and have a look |

yeah but i thought th rod might be hitting the lifter, and it's on the side under the intake, i rekon you can get the rocker cover off without removing thw intake, but other people reckon you couldn't

Sure it isn't a leaking exhaust manifold gasket? They sound just like you've described, and get louder under load.
I can't get the drivers side rocker cover off without taking the stock HO upper manifold off. If someone reckons they can, I'd love to hear how.
