cheap speaker upgrade?

I think I am in need of some cheap speaker upgrades or similar in my car (EA Wagon)

as with the windows wound down and at freeway speeds I have to turn the stereo right up and the speakers distort :( rendering it pretty pointless,

my plan at the moment is to buy some cheap 4" (they are 4" speakers in the doors right?) and see if that helps, unless you guys have any tried and tested improvements, I know the headdeck isnt the bestest in there but it cant be that bad!

and really cant afford an expensive solution :(

just find the best 4"ers u can get for what u can afford
stick to brand names! =P
dont get boss or somethin stupid

Boz your correct

Dont get your cheapo "us audio, Audioline, Dominator, etc" as they really wont be better then stock. being a 4" I wouldnt go crazy either with $$$$ on them. 4" have there limitations.

For a cheap GOOD Basic 4" I would recomment a Pioneer TSG 1040 4" speaker. It will sound quite nice and doesnt cost a fortune (around $50 for the pair?)

I tend to dissagree my old man has some boss 4" splits in his car and for the price he paid (which i cant remember) they are a good cheapo speaker. and also just because they are brand names doesnt mean they are better, he actually bought pioneer 4" first and they were fairly average. I guess it all comes down to how much you want to spend.

cool, will have a look and get something that looks and feels good rather than just shopping by name, size of magnet look/feel of cone and that sorta deal, I take it its gonna be a simple case of door cards off and a easy change over?

I have Jaycar Responce 2 way 4" in the fronts, they are ok until you reallly pump it.

i seriously wouldn't bother with a 4" speaker. If you can afford it get a 6" speaker and get the metal cut out so they fit. Even if you only have a 4" grill on the doors, it will still sound better than a 4".

I have Kenwood 12" Sub + and 6" 2 Ways in the Galant and they sound really nice. I like there gear for price and performance. Also, Pioneer make some awesome gear. Stick with brands that specialize in a field, ie not companies that make everything.

Listen to stuff too, a lot of car audio places have stuff on audio-demo, it will sound different in a car obviously, but you'll get a good idea.

I had the same problem i went for a spin down to super cheep got a set of explode 4in for 50 bucks and they go alright unless you really pump it and my head unit has the same out put.

You have got to be careful though, decent speakers expect a high power, clean output. Which a stock deck doesn't give. Theres no point in getting $100 100w speakers when the deck only puts out 5w, because its not enough to make the speakers work, thats how speakers blow, the amp craps itself and gives raw dc votage instead of signal. So don't touch splits without an amp, they're less efficient and require more wattage. When you're shopping for speakers find the ones with the highest db/w, thats the measure of efficiency, normally around 89Db/w, anything around 91+ is good. From memory phillips speakers are pretty cheap and efficient as they don't really worry about the aftermarket sales, just decent speakers for stock systems.
Ideally you want the deck or amp to put out more than the speakers nominal wattage.\eg what EAman said cheap sony speakers will do the job. (decks no matter what they claim, will put out no more than a clean 20w per channel, if you believe other wise, do you think that most of an amp is empty space? Or that whats in a 4x50amp fits in a deck in a space 1/16 of a size? It's all to do with the amount of power circuitry needed for that wattage, it can't fit in a deck with all the other stuff)

And pioneer don't specialise in speaker or amps either, even though they make both. Pioneer are decent for decks, and good for bottom range speakers (mainly subs though), but that's not their specialty, same as sony, their speakers and amps aren't that great. mb quartz, focal, boston accoustic make better speakers, even kicker make better speakers, because thats what they specialize in and other brands make better amps (eg rockford). You could take this as far as you want, I own a pioneer deck and sub, but I know there's speaker companies that do a better job. the best solution, it to get a piece of 16mm MDF, cut it to shape, to cover the bottom section of the door, and mount 6X9s up front, with a seperate amplifier, to give them 100+watts a side...

any 4inch speakers are going to be pretty much the same as stock (volume wise) as the stock paper cone speakers are quite efficient...

Dude, Kenwood even make a water purifier, not even an electric item. I do have an opinion on how to select a brand there, Pioneer make some other stuff too, other electronics tho, treat those two as an exemption. I do see how you've read it, but I could've included Sony to that rule too, but I reckon there stuff literally x-plodes.

It still doesn't mean Kenwood can't make good stuff, or that I've contridicted myself.. But for the guy asked, and my rule still makes perfect sense to follow, ie: If you don't know what's good, stick with brands that specialize.

hey guys, ive got fusion 4" splits in the front, i rate them, they go really hard with the rest of my system and never had any distortion! my system is listed before. do eb doors have 6" in them ?
