Default AMG Astons coming soon

New engines for Aston Martin, will Aston's brand cache broaden with this tieup with AMG? Umm maybe imo, dont know how the purist's will feel though with this latest venture!

eh i have no issue with it, the V12 in the current crop of Astons is essentially two V6 Mondeo engines fused together.

That's a but of a furphy. While originally part of the 'Mondeo V6' architecture, there are a huge number of changes, especially in more recent versions (One-77 and AM11 that powers the current generation of cars). It would be similar to the relationship between the Modular V8 and V10 except there's even less commonality.

I have no problem with it. Marry up arguably some of the best engines in the world with the most sylish cars in the world = win-win for customers.

I like the idea of AMG supplying motors but i hope there will be no AMG badges plastered on the side of the new Astons - a little Aston branding on the side of Lewis Hamiltons F1 racer would be cool though!

cheers, Maka

As a huge aston fan for a long time, I'm not sure what to feel about this. In the older days, Aston had their own engines. All the classics really are Aston through and through.
More recently, they've borrowed the AJ6 and AJ-V8 from Jag- with major modifications- and the V12 was developed by Ford, though nobody else uses it. I'm not sure any of the modern models will ever achieve the cult 'classic' status that the old ones will.

It's nice to romanticise about bespoke engines and a pure, classic Aston in the future but this Ford and post Ford era is the only time Aston has been profitable. Further, Mercedes and AMG are way ahead in terms of engine technology: Their engines are far lighter, far more efficient and do that whilst producing the same or better performance.

I think that as long as the engines are just different enough from AMG offerings and offer a proper aggressive Aston sound then this is probably a good thing.

Well AMG supply engines to Pagani and they don't seem to have too many AMG/MB badges on them.

AMG/Mercedes are supplying engines to Infiniti/Nissan soon. BMW/MB seem scared of the VW's vast model spread and component amortization so this may be one way of pegging it back.

Thought 1 - Does this mean that the Toyota based Cygnet will be shown the door. It was only produced to lower Aston's fleet average CO2 levels. Could they replace it with a Smart Fortwo?

Thought 2 - Way back in the late 80's before Ford bought in to Aston. Victor Gauntlett (Aston MD) dreamed of producing a cheap, high-volume Aston with a Mercedes-Cosworth engine (2.5 litre, 4 cylinder).
