what other transmissions fit?

so yeah i got 78 escort van with the 2L pinto and i know the c3 was the auto from factory but i am just wondering what other auto transmission will work?

firstly why the c3 get a manual conversion better in the long run. By the way I have all parts for a manual conversion

Its already got the manual attached to it and i'll gladly swap it for a auto box with all attachments needed. 2 yrs ago i had a car crash and was left a paraplegic from it. cant use a clutch or gas pedal and well i never really used the brake pedal

JIMSTONE that auto box looks tough as nails but its serious over kill and my pockets are pretty shallow for my eski van build. im gonna spend more time and money in the back to transform it into small shaggin wagon.

But i am still curious to know what other autos will work with the pinto. i dont know much about escorts and all fords. i know the C4 is a 3sp is there a 4sp auto that will slide in with minimal fuss?

To my knowledge ther are no other readily adapted auto boxes available. Anything other than a C3 is going to take a fair bit of work to get it to fit up to a pinto engine.


You will find most four speed autos are electronic based units with the exception of the Jatco L4N71b out of Nissans and Mazdas in the the mid eighties.

don't know if your still looking for that alternative auto box to the C3 but the A4LD is the same box with an overdrive and will take the C3 bell housing
i'm in the same position in a wheelchair and am researching the same topic at the moment

Bit of an old thread. haha.
Unfortunately the A4LD never came in an australian delivered car, the lastest version of the c3/A4LD, the 5r55e, out of the explorers did but unfortunately are electronic.
And there are a few pinto c4 bellhousing floating around but they are rare and expensive, the last i seen was $500 on ebay and that was just for the bellhousing, no trans.

yeah the 5r55e is an interesting prospect, I know it's electronic but if you use a stand alone transmission controller like this http://www.usshift.com/ , then it becomes a possibility (depending on how deep your pockets are I suppose)
