Very sad to hear. He was brilliant as Tony Soprano. So many brilliant lines from the show.

But no surprise he had a heart attack, he was a big man. RIP.

He was a great actor. Sopranos is up there as one of my favourite TV series of all time.
His daughter is only 8 months old. That would be terrible for his whole family.

Very sad to hear, I enjoy the Sopranos immensely and it now has taken on a new perspective knowing that James is dead.

That said, in trying to find news of the Sopranos star I found out what that ending with the screen turning to black actually meant.

It was in fact Tony Soprano being shot in the head in front of his family which is why the screen went blank.
David Chase said that in the final scene, everything is there for the avid viewer to work out what happened.
Firstly, if you watch the last episode in the diner you see Tony sitting in the booth, surveying everything and the camera is his point of view. You see him watching everyone walking through the door. When AJ walks in, he looks right past the man coming in with AJ as he watches his son. This man is wearing a grey "Members Only" jacket. This guy sits at the bar and watches Tony and then gets up and walks to the toilet over Tony's right shoulder, shooting him a glance before walking past. You don't see him again. Now, in early season 6 Eugene was asked to kill some guy in a diner, and when he shot him in a similar scene he was wearing the same "Members Only" jacket. Later in the series, when Silvio gets shot the shooter is wearing the same "Members Only" jacket.
In the credits for the last episode, there is the cast member for the "Man in Members Only jacket".
You see Meadow entering the diner just before the end, which is why Tony would have looked up to see his daughter arrive so being distracted, the shooter in the members only jacket kills him.

Sorry if you guys all knew this, the ending ****ed me off so much it has been a niggling thing that has bothered me since the shows end.
Apparently in an interview David Chase also said seeing the death of Tony in front of his family would not sit well with fans who much loved the Tony character, so the cryptic ending to tie the whole rise and downfall of Tony Soprano and his crew was the best way to end.

Oh, and RIP James Gandolfini, you have brought much happiness to the world and were indeed a supreme actor.
