Default NSW Custom Number plate sale.

I have a black letter on a sunflower back ground number plate. No Numbers only letters.. "FRINEM" Just last week payed the rip ff $440 Per year fee to display. damn NSW RTA.
Should i decide to sell the plates what happens to the $440 allready payed?
Is it free payment for the buyer? kind of like rego on a car? or do the RTA refund you the average of how many days left so kind of like working out $1.25 per day X however many days left until next yearly payemnt = your refund?

Any Help would be appreciated.

Here a thought Ring the RTA!

But from past experience with RTA I'm fairly certain the 440 is gone and not refundable or transferable.

Number plates are the biggest rip-off.

A look on the Myplates website answers questions. Here, I did the work for you. Npo thanks needed. Just throw money

Transferring Ownership

If a vehicle is transferred with annual fee plates on it, does the new owner have to pay the annual fees or do they get a refund?
The new vehicle owner is responsible for the annual fee. If they do not want to pay the annual fee they can return the number plates and request RMS standard number plates or myPlates standard content number plates for a one-off order fee. There are no refunds on annual fees that have already been paid.

Can I transfer my customised number plates?
Personalised Plus number plates or Numeral-Only number plates can be transferred to anyone.

Personalised number plates are transferable only to family members, de facto couples, between vehicles owned by the same company or between companies and employees. You will need to provide proof of your relationship.

How do I transfer my customised number plates?
To transfer your plates, simply take them to an RMS Motor Registry and complete an Exchange Transfer Number Plates form. This form can also be downloaded from the RMS website on the Publications, statistics and forms page. Transfer and storage fees will apply.

Can I order plates under my details but then transfer them to someone else if they have not yet been issued to a vehicle?
Yes. However, the person you are giving the plates to will need to obtain a letter from you relinquishing the Rights to the plates. If the person who placed the order advises that the plate was intended as a gift and wasn't placed in storage or on a vehicle then no fee applies. If you ordered the plate and now wish to transfer it to someone else (Personalised Plus and Numeral Only plates or plates transferred between family members), an exchange or plate transfer fee applies.

Or if you want to have a more detailed look here is a link.

You can still sell the plates.
Just need to come to an agreement with a buyer that you will give them back to the RTA and they'll just order them the next day.

And I though $255/yr to have "FIREFLY" was expensive. Glad I'm not in NSW!

In the NT when personalised plates first came in you paid a one off fee of $500 for your plates.

In the early 90's the price dropped and was dependant on how many letters and how many numbers. The more letters you wanted the more the plates cost as it was a sliding scale.

Now we just pay a one off of $150 and I think that is it.

I like the Qld. plates, good range of designs & AFAIK, you only pay once to buy them, you don't even have to ever put them on a car, you also don't have to be a Qld. resident to buy them.
Only trouble is, those number/letter configurations are taken out of the available combo's for Qld. registration use, which is a little unfair if you're only going to put them on your bar or garage/shed wall in your non-Queensland property.
Shame you can't buy Qld. plates & put them on an interstate registered car.

I bought personalized plates about a decade a go for a few hundred and I have not paid a cent since. I can swap to other cars free. Many years ago when I took the car of the road for a few months for a tart up, it cost ziltch to re reg with them on. This in Qld. We pay just over $1000 to reg a v8 though. We all get rorted just in different ways.

Yes but, if you kept them for 5 years in NSW that would be equivalent cost (initial $160 payment + $440 payment each year), keep them longer & it'll cost you even more. Get rid of them (hand them back), you've lost all that money. Under the Qld. scheme, you keep them for life, whether they are used on a car or not, you don't have to give them back, or store them at a motor registry for more money, when they're not on a car.
