Default Mixing oil?

The oil in my ute is nearly on the low mark. i have some oil that is the same as whats on the oil filler cap. but i got a feeling ford put in a thinner oil at my last service to try and fix a ticking noise. would it be ok to just top up with the stuff i have. only a few thousand k's b4 it needs servicing again.

I wouldn't mix a mineral with a synthetic myself, but I'm also interested in what Mainlube would say about this.

FRom what the OP said, I figured he was talking about both oils being low viscosity, and so both would be at least semi synthetic.

While on the subject of mixing synth with mineral possibly being a no no. Wouldn't all of the semi synth oils on the local auto shelves be part mineral oil, part synthetic? What would make that oil ok to be a mixture, and other synths and mineral oils not? Maybe some special additive????? I don't know, maybe someone else can answer.

I always thought that the scale of how "synthetic" an oil was, depended upon how much the oil has been "modified" or "refined" by humans. I didn't think it was a case of some synthetic oil mixed with mineral. Once you get to certain point of modification the oil is considered semi-synthetic. Keep going and the oil moves to being fully synthetic.

I remember discussing this with a Mobil oil engineer once. I also remember him saying that Mobil had the highest standard for the definition of "synthetic". He would say that of course! LOL!

As for blending viscosities within the same class of oil (ie mineral, semi or fully synthetic), I'd do that with no worries until funds permitted me a full oil change.

I guess we'll wait again for Mainlube, or someone else who's got the good oil on the subject!

Group 4 Synthetic (PAO) with Group 3 Synthetic (mineral) or Group 2 mineral is no problem and I would expect all your semi syn's group 4 POA blended with Group 2 & 3.

group 5 (ester) I wouldn't go mixing anything with this as in the past a big no no (not sure the latest on this as I don't use Group 5 engine oils)

You guys should be only plying with Group 2, 3 & 4 anyway.
