Well if I was back in Australia, I would hold on for the new Ranger, it's supposed to be very good. Toyotas are a little overhyped in my opinion. Theres nothing wrong with them (when you can control them), they are just nothing special. If Nissan offered the V6 diesel in the Navara in Australia, then that would be pretty sweet too (though overpriced). I'm pretty sure Ford has been working on the Ranger long enough to make sure it's ahead of the competition. Also the bed looks longer than the Japanese trucks, but I could be wrong. The dash in the spy pic looks very Falcon-like in my opinion.

A mate of mine recently (last 12 months or so) bought the Triton diesel. He knows his cars (and trucks) and would have researched his options to death. He is very happy with it. Apparently there is a minor issue with driver's seat comfort levels on long trips. Can't remember exactly but think he bought some sort of spacer kit to adjust seat position or angle or something, and it made a world of difference. I agree with the VW Amarok, the 2.0L twin turbo has better performance and much better fuel economy than the Hilux, and even my old dinkie from when i was 5 would have better brakes than a Hilux. The Amarok will have been out 12 months by the time it gets here too.
We had a few troubles with the 2 Hilux's at work, one kept get taken back for a knocking sound in the engine and toyota wouldn't come to the party. Both would eat through brakes like a fat kid eats cake, and are the scariest things to use, either no brakes or lockup, I was warned and still was worse than expected. Triton would probably be my best bet, and agree with the diesel sentiments. They are more of a work horse, but make sure you check out the stats first, toyota wouldn't know how to make a diesel if it meant the end of their company. Looking around and comparing specs is a big thing. Stoney!
