Turn your TOMTOM on then hold down the power button until it turns off and keep holding it until it then restarts and plays its little tune. It will take about 20 seconds.

It needs a reset, mine went stupid like that too.

Hi Scotty,

If you find it cannot be resuscitated by flappists assistance, i recommend tomtoms still. Ive had one for a while and the new models look really nice.

My girlfriend had a Garman Nuvie, it's ok, a little unwieldy though. Looks a lil nicer than the tomtoms, but its just a base model too.

I've been heavily warned against Navmans. Apparently their messages to turn up ahead are bordering on incessant and annoying, not too mention a lil late though ive never used one.

You should be able to re-load the software to your TOM-TOM via USB if resetting it doesn't work.

I was told the best bang for your buck GPS on the market today is the Garmin 265W.
I picked up one for $328 from JB HIFI and it is great.
Happily recommend it.

Nokia 6110 Navigator. Does exactly what a GPS does, plus makes phone calls and plays mp3s.

I've had a Garmin, and now a TomTom.

The TomTom has more 'technical' features, and more customisable but it's routing is occasionally bizarre, and it's ETA can be grossly inaccurate.
The Garmin was more user friendly with a better display.

I'll keep the TomTom I have now, but if buying again, I'd get a Garmin.

Bought one for myself about 4 months ago and have just bought one for the wife.
It's the only GPS I have used so far that works really well when I get in between the buildings in the middle of Sydney.
It also has blue tooth, so no getting booked with the mobile anymore.
I can highly recommend it.

I bought a charger off ebay for the car , as my other one broke and it only keeps power to it not charges it , wierd. And ever since i used it that happened. Might have to look round 4 a propper one.
Thanks guys on your gps recomendations.

This could go on and on and on and on and on and on....

Tom Tom, Garmin or Navman are the best.

They all fail no matter what the brand is. Some people will buy a good brand and it never has a problem, while someone else will buy the SAME brand and it will do nothing but play up !

( Scotty boy, , how old is the TomTom XL ? ? ? )

i have used Garmins, Navmans, Magellan and Tom Toms. Garmin Nuvi, by far! is the best. Especially with the dashmount. I recommend the lower models, not really necessary to get the gimmicky 760 and higher. You don't need MP3s! That's what iPods are for. Get an iPod to play music (and rip your CDs in to iTunes using AIF or lossless). Get a Garmin Nuvi to show you where to go.
