Default Premium fuel price on rise

www.drive.com.au

Quote:
Diesel fuel prices have recently fallen below those of petrol for the first time in a decade. But while diesel buyers rejoice, there's likely to be more pain ahead for petrol buyers. Georgie Wells, a spokeswoman for retail fuel supplier Caltex Australia, said prices for premium petrol - mainly used in luxury or performance cars - were rising while regular 91RON petrol was stable. She said the price petrol stations paid Caltex for the fuel they sold at the pump had risen by 1 cent a litre for 95 RON fuel in the last month, while the price for 98 RON fuel had risen by 2 cents a litre. That did not include the margin added by the petrol stations. Caltex's retail fuel price is calculated using the cost of producing 95 RON fuel in Singapore, the closest international fuel-trading hub. Ms Wells said that while the cost of producing 91RON fuel had not changed, higher-grade fuels had become more expensive for reasons the company could not explain. She said Asia's slowing economy had pushed diesel fuel prices below petrol's for the first time in more than a decade as regional demand dried up. At times, diesel has cost up to 30cents a litre more than petrol. Shell Australia spokesman Paul Zennaro said the thirst for diesel fuel in Asia, and an oversupply of petrol, meant that cheap petrol had flooded into Australia for the past few years. Ms Wells said the market forces of dwindling supply and steady demand were likely to push fuel prices higher. "The way that refineries work is that if there is a slowdown or cut in production for one product, it affects the other one," Ms Wells said. "There's only so much diesel and so much petrol that they can produce, and if you cut one then you cut the other."

What a disgrace. It's really not that much more expensive to produce any "premium" fuel over the standard crap. They just "need" to make up for the loss in revenue that cheaper diesel has brought after people started whinging about it's ridiculous overpricing and the govt. started listening...

Exactly, just a way to increase profits.

Yeh, I always knew that premium was more expensive, but when I got to the bowser yesterday I relized that the PULP was 14c more a litre. I just go regular now.

Would you like some lube with your purchase of premium fuel?

I'll have to check how much more it is when I fill up tomorrow morning but I fill up with 95oct regardless of the price difference.

They have been bending over diesel buyers for years, now they worked out a lot of modern cars achieve fuel efficiency and emissions by running PULP which would Rort more people than diesel, So now they have decided its someone else's turn..........

I always use regular in the BA and Territory, but when we go away I usually use premium because I have been led to believe it burns better so its better for the car...to my horror it was 14c more in Melbourne and a massive 20c more in Albury last weekend....Felt like pulling my dacks down to make it easier whilst getting bent over

That is gold

I remember only a few years ago 98 was only 10c per litre more now its 13/14c's and 95 is 10's more they are just pushing the margin up somewhere.

They are going to make the same money somewhere its just playing musical chairs. 12 months ago we were all whinging about petrol so petrol went down a bit and diesel was more expensive then The diesel guys were jumping up and down so diesel gos down but petrol's more expensive. Like I said musical chairs!
