Hey guys, need to replace my water pump pulley just need to know if I'll need to remove the water pump to do so?
Haven't had a chance to look yet, but if it does need to come out I might as well replace it while I'm at it. Thanks. |

I changed a water pump on my wife's S3 only a few months ago, but I can't for the life of me remember what fitting the pulley involved. Just looked up 2 manuals which both gloss over this detail. You need a puller to get it off cleanly so I think it may need a press to refit. I've typically had 60,000 to 100,000 km from a water pump, if you don't know how old yours is it'd be worth replacing and renewing the coolant for peace of mind.
Worth shopping around for the pump. I just checked Ford & Repco IIRC and both were around $150. Supercheap had a Japanese-made pump on the shelf for around $75 at the time.

In regards to the pulley you need a special puller. Easier to get a new pump with the pulley already fitted.

The pumps and pulleys are sold separately.

the powermax waterpump comes with or without pulley. It cost me $69-with pulley. I attempted to remove pulley on 2 old water pumps (as the original one i bought had no pulley)- Major pain in the A$$. Also at supercheap i noticed they sell just the pulley.

The pulley's are dead simple to install. Find a bolt that fits the thread in the shaft of the waterpump, use washers for spacers so that you've got about 3 turns of thread into the shaft before there's pressure on the pulley and tighten the bolt until it bottoms. The thread in the end of the shaft isn't overly deep so you'll then need to keep adding washers and tightening the bolt again until the pulley is on.
