Do you need your AU hand brake adjusted properly????

I had the rotors and the bands replaced on mine 6 months ago. It worked fine until the mechanic who serviced the car last week adjusted it. Now I've got that sh-sh-sh-sh AU handbrake feeling again!!

I am very gentle on my handrake too as I know how fragile it is. As for the brakes being a weak link that may have been the case up until the AUI but AUII and later are not bad at all. Tickford/Premo brakes are another step above and Brembo's are Brembo's.

Ask any brake specialist about late model Falcon handbrakes and they will tell you the same as I am telling you now, they are woeful and need constant attention. Even then they WILL squeal.

But I wonder if it is possible to use the EF/EL set up, i said a few posts ago the only difference is AU's 1 clip EF's 2 clips.

I have worked on cabs for years, some are a pain in the butt, some are not.

I find if you drill/tap and fit the second clip and use x2 new clips it pretty much does the job, as long as the disc drums are not ovall.

I think most AU owners will just agree the handbrake is rubbish. If ur lucky enough not to have one squeal, I'm sure you are making the other AU owners envious, coz I guarantee like me they dont have a handbrake at all.

On that note Russ Im flush again lets get some bits (Need some handbrake pads for sure LOL)

I've owned 2 AU's (still own one of them), and I service my folks one regularly.
I can't say I've had the slightest problem with any of the handbrakes.
I've changed pads, disks, and flushed fluids on all of them and done routine adjustments.
All of them work flawlessly, and I'm not gentle at all on my own handbrake, just pull it untill it won't go any further.

Sound slike a bunch of bad mechanics to me.
And I'm not deaf either, far from it.

This forum is like a group therapy session, you think your the only one with problems until you realize there are other people out there with the same issues as you...then you feel much better...Until something else with your AU @#$! up.

I've nearly done my head in trying to adjust out the handbrake squeak. I feel like a dog chasing its tail...can never quite get it. My 2 year old daughter hovers around me while i work on the car, normally stealing tools, parts etc, and she has seen me adjust the handbrake enough times that i would feel confident giving her a crack at it.

Anyway i feel better knowing it's a common problem, not just me.

And I just got a call from the Ford workshop where my car is being serviced and coincidentally the handbrake shoes are being replaced to say I'd have to fork over another $255 for rear brake pads, $90 for a handbrake cable and $275 for a new handbrake lever. Told 'em not to worry about that

ffs took my car up for the second time to have the handbrake readjusted (they looked at it again for free because they made it squeal the first time) and its a million times worse now - just got it home back then. theyre a bloody long way away from me but have been good in servicing all other parts of my car...does anyone know of any good mechs in the western suburbs of adelaide who can adjust the damn handbrake properly?

I too had the ongoing squeeking handbrake issue with my AU3 XR.
The Ford Dealer never got it sorted...was reported at each service.
I myself tried a variety of adjustment methods (most from advice on this forum) all with no success.

I finally fixed it 6 months ago and have not had a squeek since:-

1. I went and bought two new banksia shoes.
These have a BA part number.... I understand that it uses a revised lining material.
2. I bevelled both edges on each shoe with a grinder. The bevel was about 3mm.
3. I installed the shoes and adjusted as per the BA manual (did not have access to an AU one at the time)... but the instructions are the same.
Adjust until the shoe diameter is 189.6mm to 189.8mm.
4. I made sure the retainer clip held the shoe firmly against the backing (called the "knuckle" in the book) ... one clip needed a slight bend to get it pushing tightly.

I also adjust the park brake cable as per the manual.... it is essentially that the cable is "loose" on the arm at the back of the knuckle at described above in the Ford Technical bulletin.

Worked like a charm... no squeeks or noise.
Handbrake holds extremely well ... needs about 6 clicks to engage fully.

BTW... I'd had the squeeking with the original rotor and with the DBA slotteds. The above was done with DBA slotted fitted.
