Choices...

First, I was unsure where to post this. Been looking for nigh on six months, and have narrowed the choices down. General opinions required on the pros and cons of each.

AU Ghia

AU Lane

BA XT/Futura

Which would be best to buy? Spending $12500 D-A.

I am currently a student, do a lot of k's (500 - 800/week), would do some occasional light towing, Looking more for bling than zing. Also love music, so adaptability to a stereo system a must.

Any of the above with factory gas option and the lowest klm / best condition you can find.
A mate of mine says his factory gas BA XT does 600klm on $35.00 of gas !

i was in a simiar situation a few months ago. wather to but a new ba xt of get a xr au.. its all up to u but go with waht u want all three are good car

. personal i think the ba but will be hard to get one for 12500 maybe a gli but not a futura unless u know someone

I'd get the BA from the auctions.
If your talking about the same engine and gearboxs in both fuel wont be much different and you'll have the same issues upgrading the stereo's anyway.
An AU fairlane will have more inside than the newer car but it still looks like a AU

he's right ... as much as i'd love to boast about our Monty'z ... the AU Fairlane is SOOOOOOO much better ... trust me ;) ... it has bling AND zing ;)

Here's one that's got it all and the owner will deliver it free, to any capital city on the eastern seaboard, or you can have 3 nights free accomodation in Cairns or Port Douglas, when you pick your "new" car up.

A "new" car and a free holiday, just the perfect reason to have that dirty weekend away.

Its funny glenn but a few months ago i would have agreed hands down, but after seeing what the lane has to offer and the monty looks with a kit, well, this thread was born..........

The AU F'lane all the way. I had the GHIA and trading up to BA XR6 and prefer the AU ..... The F'lane is just that little bit more car and as far as MPG, would be no real difference at all!

The AU Ghia; as much bling as the 'lane but without the extra body length to annoy you when parking. Unless of course your the designated driver alot then get the 'lane, your mates would love it.

No real need fo the BA if your not looking for the extra mumbo and an upmarket AU definitely has more bling than a low spec BA. AU would have a 9 or 11 speaker stereo with a CD stacker too.

get the an AU Mont Ghia. it has evrything that the Lane has and if anything the consumption would be a fraction less. it's smaller and easier to park too.

AU Ghia, because you don't sit in the back, and you have to fill it up and park it, the Ghia would go just as well if not better, and have a good stereo, so yeah, GEEYARR!

So general consensus seems to be the ghia. Cheers, the BA would be nice but will cost too much to mod imo, for what i do. Thanks.

I'm going to go against the trend here. I'm going to say BA XT.
My reasoning is that, as a student, you are not exactly rolling in money. Now as much as I love the AU's the Ghia and the Lane are "gizmo and gadget hot". Lots of electrics, lots of features. These are great till they go balls up, then they become expensive gremlins. Without the funds to repair them on the go they become multiple gremlins until they get to a point where the cost to fix them is just too much and its easier to sell off and move on.

So, while I consider both AU's to be a "better" car than a bog stock base BA XT, I think that the BA will be easier to maintain simply because it doesnt have the high end electronics the AU's have.

Just a thought for you.

AU Ghia as the Lane is too slow.

Go to trueblueford.com and check out the specs.

Get a AU Ghia optioned with bodykit and sport suspension and you have a luxury XR.

The BA still has it's electric gremlins. About the only thing the BA would have less than the AU is climate control. Things like central locking, CD stackers, power windows, cruise control, and all manner of engine related electronics can still go awry in the BA. Only it wont have leather, woodgrain, a plethorer of speakers, and lots of chrome "bling".

But true, the AU1 will be at about the 10 year mark when traditionally everything starts to break down.

Purely based on appearence you would have to say the BA, inside and out they are a far better looking car, as for reliability I havnt got a bad word to say about my BA.

AU lane.

my mums AU lane is heaps cooler than my AU monty.

easier the do the stereo than the BA and economy will be good if all highway driving.

I agree with Casper on that fact that more toys is just more to go wrong. So that would mean the BA. The thing is, if you are into your music as much as I am, you are going to have more trouble installing an awesome system into a BA that you would in an AU. The integrated stereo in the BA is a pain to upgrade if you are looking to take it on yourself. The AU conveniently gives you a neat double-din space to instal a DVD player and screen.
I can only go from experience. My dad has an AUIII Ghia, and he has had no end of electrical problems. Climate control, traction control, imobilser, all have had issues.
So, if I were you, and I was, look at an AU Futura. You still get full electric windows, cruise and ABS. The seats are basically Fairmont spec also.

Done the comparisons, but am stuck. Was interested as to what each is like to those that have experience with them. With the stats i am thinking the AU ghia, as it is best on fuel, but the lane has the class and room and the ba will (most likely) have the least k's/be the newer car......
