For that sort of money, you could probably get some slotted rotors and ok pads.

If you can stretch a bit more, FTG Auto Salvage have a front brake upgrade kit for around a few hundred more - Territory slotted rotors, Territory calipers.

DBA slotteds will set you back around $170 per side, and Bendix Ultra Premium pads (around $60 a set) work great with them, so that would be around $400 if you fit the discs etc yourself. You can get RDA slotted discs for around $120 per side, but the hub part needs painting or it will rust - the DBAs come with paint on the hub already, so it's up to you if you think paint is worth $50 - the RDA discs seem to perform just as well as the DBAs.

Or as private 9 suggested, a set of the very large territory discs and callipers and pads is a great upgrade, but you need to run 17" wheels minimum. IIRC, the AU2 discs are around 287mm on the front, and the territory's are more like 310 or 320mm - so quite a lot more disc/pad surface to assist in stopping duties.
