you could try something along these lines:
http://fordmods.com/forums/documents.php?doc=70
either do it like this one and take out the air vents going to the rear or cut a second hole in the back of the centre console and have the cup holders above the vents.

I thought I'd dredge up this old thread to add some more info.

Today at work I went for a spin in a new Hilux, and they have a dash-mounted popout cupholder that looks to be of similar dimensions to that of a Falcon ashtray, however it isn't entirely square. I thought that maybe this could be of use to someone wanting to make a custom cupholder.

Unfortunately the internet filter at work won't let me look up images of Hiluxes (wtf?) so I can't include an image in this post.

And, just to clarify, I mean the dash-mounted cupholders in these hiluxes, not the centre console one or the ones in the doors where our E-Series map pockets are.

just had an idea for a great cup holder! i might give it a shot! im thinking if i grabbed the pull out part of the cup holder from an AU and put it in front of the centre console. i know 2 cans can fit there no probs so hopefully this idea will work!

Would they fit on the outer edges of the HU surround? Although that means you have to do a 'reach around' to adjust the volume or eject the CD, etc.

May have issues with the handbrake if you try that method. So far, Dave has come up with the best method, but it may not suit manuals too well

nah I doubt there'd be enough room on the flat parts of the outer edges, unless you cut into the raised edges of the surround a little.

i like my idea with the part from the au cupholders, its in the normal position and it wont get in the way of the gearstick or cd player!
it might have to wait till after christmas tho!
