Default New Focus ST Info thread.

Not sure if this is a repost as article is a mth old

Quote:
Ford Australia has confirmed the Ford Focus ST will keep its global name when it hits local showrooms, rather than adopt an XR moniker.
Ford Australia says it is yet to confirm an on-sale date for the all-new Ford Focus ST, but says it is definitely on the way. We expect the Focus ST to land Down Under sometime in 2012.

A Ford Australia spokesman today confirmed the ST name was locked in for our market.
“There’s has been a lot of speculation about whether it will carry the ST name. We can confirm it will be called the ST when it arrives,” the spokesman said.
The second-generation Focus ST (called the Focus XR5 Turbo in Australia) is currently being sold alongside the third-generation Focus line-up. As the name suggests, it is powered by a five-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The new model, however, will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. This means the XR5 name no longer applies, and calling it an XR4 could cause confusion with the sports variant of the old Fiesta.

The decision from Ford Australia is in line with the company’s new unified, global ‘One Ford’ ethos.
The new 2012 Ford Focus ST will produce approximately 184kW of power and 360Nm of torque – up from the current model’s 166kW/320Nm output.

The clip above gives us our first good look at (and listen to) the new Focus ST in action, as Ford director of global performance vehicles, Jost Capito, tests a prototype at Ford’s European proving grounds.

“We are determined that the new Focus ST will meet the very high expectations of our fans around the world,” Mr Capito said.

“Focus ST will deliver on the promise of great technology, exciting driving dynamics and high levels of refinement – making it as enjoyable to use for everyday driving as it will be on exciting and challenging roads we performance enthusiasts deliberately seek out.”
IMO its a good idea for all the reasons outlined in the article, IIRC FoA were the only division to change the name of the ST, so now it brings us inline with the rest of the world.

I can't see why calling it XR4 would confuse the punters, since they already called 5-pot Mondeo an XR5 and people managed to work out which was which. It also means they'll have to educate the public again that the ST (rather than XR) is the performance version of the Focus. That's all cool, though. It sounds like they have a car worthy of promotion.

I think their biggest mistake is not introducing an automatic version. Apparently, 70% of VW GTI's are auto, and the Focus would have a price advantage on that, if not quite the snob factor.

If it gets called XR4 then what happens if the fiesta ST comes then what do they call that?
The GTi polo is now only available in DSG anyway, I don't think no auto will make a difference, besides who would buy and auto hot hatch

That last bit is a joke before anyone gets the gloves off.

I know that was in jest but funnily enough thats exactly the prediciment I find myself in. A Polo GTi would be at the top of my list if it came in a manual, I dont want an auto hot hatch.

As it is I will probably find myself in a second hand LV XR5 in the next year or so. Not sure if I can wait until the new ST. Even if I could I probably couldn't afford one anyway lol.

Same here considering its legal in Victoria under the small fuel efficient cars rule, I would have certainly gone Polo GTI over my TDCI Focus, but no way in hell am I driving an auto car.

I would have had a new Polo instead of the Focus if it wasn't for the ridiculous 8 month waiting time to get it. By the time it arrived it would have been last years model and worth $10k less as soon as I drove it out the showroom

I think an auto in the sports wagon ST would make sense, since it isn't strictly a hot hatch. Ford would be costing themselves a lot of sales in this country, let alone that number x10 or 20 in the U.S. with manual only.

When Falcon ceases to be designed and made here, and is replaced with the Taurus, be interesting if the ST monika is used for that, or the SHO is used?

SHO will be used I think. The US Fords and EU Fords have some differences. If a EU Ford goes to the US it retains it's naming conventions. If a US Ford goes to the US , the same happens. Same will be here I think. UK and US Fords will keep there naming conventions in Oz. It's a real problem for me.ST Focus will be a really tempting package and certainly a weapon. SHO won't realistically hit Australia till at least 2014............................

Default New Focus ST

I see the new Focus ST has been released at the Paris Motor Show. From the pics I have seen and specs I have read I am impressed. I am looking at getting one as a daily driver.

I am keen for more info if anyone has any.

Wont be around until later in the year with a $40k~ price tag id say.
Spec level will be interesting ie if it is built in 1 spec level not 3 like the current ST.
Being a 'Global' car you would think that the changes in spec would be minimal for different markets.
If there is different spec levels like current model (ST1, ST2 and ST3) then i rekcon we may get a mix and match model like the current ST with it being on the poorer end of the scale (Hope im wrong though)

Later this year suits me. My house will be built and wont have to drive on dirt roads as I do at the moment to get home.

I would expect around the 40k mark. I do hope they carry reasonable equipment. Cruise control standard would be nice.

looking at the 'first drive' video, looks like the assisted parallel parking won't be on it. I wonder why the took it off the 'top spec version'?

Compare that to the stuff they took off the 'top spec' XR5.

IMO its a hot hatch it doesnt need all that rubbish, as is with the current ST, its very bland but it works very well.

Maybe to cut costs, not something I would miss anyhow. Hope they have the black type wheels seen on the bronze type colour one, this combo would suit me

Just a waiting game now...
