Default Falcon XR4 Turbo Anyone?

Had the privilege of driving a Ecoboost Falcon during the week. Was very interested to see what all the fuss was about and to see if it was really as good as had been written about. Simple answer...YES. The power was similar to the straight six but the torque spread was a bit better. Handling also felt much better. So the next thought was. Would there be a market out there for an Ecoboost in XR guise? You would think that tuners will have a play soon and grab a bit more power out of it. The improved handling due to less weight up front would make it a bit of a weapon potentially. I see the biggest problem being brand acceptance. What do you guys reckon?

I'd like to see it as a Falcon XR4T.

Have added a poll. Will be interested to see how it pans out over time. Since I drove the Ecoboost must admit I am not so worried about the standard I6 going. Can't say the same about the huge hole that would be missing from the F6 and XR6T. They are truly great engines.

Cool. Didn't see that one. Thought that it was a relevant thread now that the motor has been released and people have had a chance to drive. Mods shut down if you choose to do so.

I voted yes. I think it would have been been better for sales if they were badged as a turbo. People know what turbo means but most would have no clue as to what Ecoboost means. I understand that it has to do with the global platform but surely a badge swap wouldn't be to costly.
XR4T would be great and also means the Gseries would have to change. G4 Turbo has a nice ring to it.

Yep.

Also think there should be G4T and G4ET.

Like it or not, the Turbo badge gives it some cache and it would boost awareness of the thing no end, rather than this pussy footing around it bit by Ford.

"It's a G6, right?"
"Yes"
"But it's got a turbo 4?"
"Yes"
"So what's the 6 about?"
*Tumble weed*

I have a Mazda6.

Do you know how many people I have to correct when they assume it has a 6 cylinder engine? Even car people...

Mazda 6 was a bit different. It took over the 626 and Mazdas changed their whole lineup to suite. Ford have only got the G6 like that.

No, but Ford widely publicised the 6 in G6 was 6-cylinder.

I think a XR4T would be a winner as would G4E and G4ET.

the "6" in G6 stands for the car being a cut above...this aint a 5 star car....

O/T

Yes, a XR4 would be a worthy addition to the line up, could pick up a few sales along the way.

Since the ecoboost engine is sold on efficiency and economy I don't think a special sports package is suitable, on the other the hand, you should be able to get the motor in any falcon trim package, including XR, or G6E.

I find it amusing that for 10 years XR enthusiasts complained the XR6 had the base engine and now technically it doesn't anymore, people want it to.

This^^^^

Everyone was screaming out that the XR nameplate had been whored out by fitting a base model engine too it, and now they have suddenly changed their tune and think it will be ok to fit an economy biased 4 cylinder to it.

Make up your minds people.

agree. I6 petrol should be tuned/improved out to about 230ish kw and be offered in XR6 only. all other models should be ecoboost or ecolpi only. ecolpi optional on XR6?

If it was 3-4 years ago I might agree. But the XR name is not the same now as it was back then. XR is now base, XR is now tax, XR is now cop car. The Damage is already been done to XR, so don’t stop now. Put the bloody Ecoboost engine in!!

One last thought, what happened to the XR8 name when the very similar powered XR6T come out? Now we have a similar powered EB4 (not in Xr form) vs XR6. This will just decrease the value of XR6 even more. Unless they put the EB4 in it!!

So what happens if they develop a great 3 cylinder motor for the Focus? Would it be no that should be for model X? I suppose the point here is that if it is a great engine who cares about the badge in some respects. If it suits the platform then why not utilise it to it's best potential.

Six months ago so many AFF members said that a 4 cylinder Falcon wouldn't work. Yep I was one of the sceptics. Now that it's here I think its great. The point of this was to ask whether our perceptions of certain badges for certain cars should restrict a possible extended use for the Ecoboost.

Well the last "unique" XR6's still shared their engine with Fairmont and Fairlane.
