Default Nuerburgring

So, i have been in Germany for the past 3 weeks doing a software training course in a town about 30 mins from the Nordschleife and the temptation to go was to great.

So the first time i did 4 x laps in a VW Scirocco with a professional driver (only way i could hire a car purely for the 'ring that wasnt a suzuki swift). And my god it was ******* fun. But ended up costing me nearly $1000AUD.

So i had an Audi TT 1.8T on the weekends to get myself around and i thought id go back one more time before i went home, but this time in the rental car - with no race instructor.

The Scirocco has race spec brakes and roll cage etc and the difference in braking was extremely noticeable and the Audi's brakes were very soft after each lap. They also were so hot they were smoking so i had to give it about a 15 minute break between each laps and took it for a slow cruise to town and back to let them cool.

Anyway i thought id share some pics, and a video of one of my laps.
Obviously im not a professional driver and my lines were pretty crap. Butit was more about having fun rather than getting the best lap time. Not to mention i wasn't insured.

If only europcar knew what i was upto in their rental

If anyone ever has the opportunity to do this however, i would highly highly recommend it. it was absolutely brilliant.

If only we had something close to this in Australia!

Probably Europecar does know you were there as they have people checking number plates.
On another forum a guy had a extra charge mailed to him for tyre wear as they had proof he had lapped the ring in there hire car.

So you can leisurely tour the nurburgring and suddenly that means you wrecked their tyres?

Unfortunately the car had quite a lot of tyre wear attributed to the drivers not so casual driving around the circuit.

sounds like money well spent to me. I'm sure many rentals get treated worse than a few hot laps.

I don't know why australia doesn't have something like that.

http://ringweekends.com/History-of-t...rand-prix.html

"Taken from Cyril Posthumus's lovely book 'The German Grand Prix' (1966)"

"Nürburg is unique, and the Germans are justly proud of it. It all began as a means of alleviating the crippling unemployment in the Coblenz-Cologne areas, credit for the idea going to Dr. Creutz, who was District Councillor of the rural Eifel district west of the Rhine. Several far-sighted civic dignitaries in the area, led by the Oberburgermeister of Cologne, one Konrad Adenauer - until recently, Chancellor of the West German Federal Republic - supported Creutz and made strong representations to the German Government to back the project financially. They argued that the unemployed had to be paid anyway, that a racing and test circuit would provide the German car industry with a permanent testing base which it greatly needed, and that it would open the poor but very attractive Eifel district to tourists.

To their credit, the Government agreed to assist the City of Cologne and other local corporations by contributing a sizeable proportion of the 15 million marks needed to put down some 18 miles of circuit through virgin country in the forested Eifel mountains, and on September 27, 1925, Dr. Fuchs, Supreme President of the Rhineland, laid the foundation stone of 'the first German mountain speed and essay track'. Within its tortuous boundaries stood one of the Rhineland's oldest castles, the ruined twelfth-century Schloss Nürburg, so they called the circuit the Nürburgring."

Man did you read anything i posted?

if you notice, the correct spelling is Nürburgring.

the ü converts to ue once anglicised.

As do most of the letters with umlauts on them (the two dots above)

If this doesnt convince you, their own website is

http://www.nuerburgring.de/en.html

To sum this up:

ü = ue

ü ≠ u

100% you have to do this.

on a side note, you can hire some awsome cars in germany/holland pretty cheap.

like a manual BMW 335 for less than 200 euro.

and the track is so long you actually feel exhausted after a few laps.

you dont have to drive fast either, lots of tourists and slow **** porsche drivers
