Default Tell'em they're dreaming!!!

Noticed that the exhaust on the AU2 XR6 is rusting. This became apparent when I couldn't see the tailpipe. I think it's somewhere between Port Melbourne and Collingwood. PM me if you find it.

Anyway went to the local Midas close to work to get an indication on price. Has anyone actually priced a replacement Ford original AU XR6 exhaust???

With Labour $2400.00!!! (this doesn't include new headers)

After I stopped laughing, nervously I asked for alternatives.

A 2.5inch sports system (I think 1 muffler and resonator) $540.00 with labour.
Don't know what brand mufflers he was quoting but I will be investigating this avenue.

Any suggestions on Mufflers? Do not want droaning. Doesn't have to be very loud but a nice rumble would be good - family car you see.

Suggestions of any good exhaust places around Melbourne that are not too far from the City?

If you're going from the cat convertor to the rear, then 540 is a little rich.

Bahahahaha - and that's at both prices

I wouldn't be paying over $400 for a catback 2.5" system. Redback is a nice one IMO or try site Sponsor HM Headers.

If your wanting performance, go the straight thru design muffler. super turbo style

If your wanting less noise, go a good quality glass pack muffler like lukey or redback

If you want both, combine a super turbo muffler with a decent sized resi at the rear of the system.

damn on that price, i would have ran straight out of the place for that price, no more and 300 for a 2.5 catback, mine was 350 but the tip itself was 100 bucks. 2 mufflers and a resi, it did have 1 muffler and thats it but was way too loud. sounds good now, idles great and is much more responsive than stock ones.that price was installed.

Know what you mean about loud...

I paid $300 for 2 1/2" catback.... then $60 to try and quieten it.... then $200 to make sure it was quieter without losing the responsiveness.

On Sun we got back from a week in Syd and it was a real pleasure to drive. The couple of trips away before that it was a pita being so loud.

Those 250-350 prices sound great... but i cant get anything like that out here in Bathurst... this town isnt big enough to warrant cheaper prices... :(

I have 2 mufflers and a resonator and paid $780 custom made, but that won't be of much use to you as I have an 8 :

The price I said would be for a Redback with one muffler and a rear resonator.

yeah yeah, rub it in, thanks Russ. :

My mate has a redback mandrel bent system with 1 muffler and resi, and I still think its too loud. Would adding another muffler midway tone the system down again without harbouring flow?

Bout 2 years ago now. Up here at Slacks Creek in Brisbane, Moss street. Was at Right Price Exhausts. Rudest bunch of people I have ever met, but I keep going back as they are good at what they do, and are really good with prices.
They told me my car would fail big time with a 3 inch. Till I went back and showed them the time slips....

Question... is buying one through Ebay worth the risk?

Depends who it is through. I once used a mob called onlineperformanceautos or something like that, they're located out in Hallam (Victoria) and still sell a lot of stuff on feePay. They stood by the warranty on a set of Pacey extractors that I bought from them, and I was only a week inside the warranty period too.

Can't complain about that.

Jeez, "How much for cash?"

Where are you guys getting these cheap prices?

Is it worthwhile going to bigger chains or going to the smaller operators.

Any exhaust places in Melbourne anyone can recommend?

Just had an interesting talk with an owner of an exhaust place. Has got mufflers from floor to ceiling, 6 car lifts chokkas with cars getting new exhausts. Been in the industry 25 years. I said I was looking at an aftermarket cat bak 2 1/2" blah blah blah. He said unless you're getting rid of it within a year, don't waste your money. Showed me his dumpster full of old mufflers including Lukey and Redback that only lasted 18 months. Basically said they were rubbish. He said the genuine mufflers are stainless steel and guaranteed for 3 years, Redbacks for 2 years.

Remember, his words not mine. I'm just the messenger.

There is some truth to what he's saying. My mate with his ef had issues with his redback system 6 months after getting it fitted. the muffler had cracked around the welds and it was leaking. He had the holes re-welded, but he said he hasnt had that happen to him before. That being said, he wouldnt go a redback system again. This was all in mild steel btw.

The question is, can you justify the added cost in going stainless steel? For looks alone, it certainly an improvement after a few years when its not all rusted looking.

Its up to the person and how long that person intends on keeping the car.
