8000/1000 with a 40GB max download and 40GB max upload limit for $89.95/month if you have your phone with them also? 20GB limited 1500/256 for $99.95/month if your phone isn't with them? They suck....

I'll stick to my $89.95/month Unlimited Telstra 512/128 ADSL.

Unlimited? Since when has Telstra ADSL been unlimited? If you consider that unlimited, then iinet's plan above is 4 times more unlimited (even more unlimited if you take advantage of downloading off-peak).

Good lord thats a sweet deal! Internet prices are even more expensive in New Zealand because one phone company owns all the lines and TelstraClear are only in the big cities or some crap like that, something about needing to be unbundled.

That's what iinet are trying to do now. They are rolling out their own DSLAMs in an effort to separate their internet from Telstra. (It's also how they can offer 8mbit connections).

The one and only reason that prices are the way they are is because of Telstra

Although it technically is unlimited downloads, you get "shaped" after 10GB. For $10 less, you could get the medium plan with iinet (without iiphone) and have an extra 10GB a month after midnight, (a good time to do your downloading). Not to mention the fact that it's a 1500k connection, almost 3 times faster than your current one. The "shaping" still occurs, but you have the ability to manage your time more appropriately.

If you think that Telstra have, in any way, a good deal, then you are a bit :

Well... I've been using it for several months, on occasion exceeding 10GB, and have never been capped from 512/128. In fact, most of the time they're leniant, and it runs 1536/128. Only on-peak does it go back to 512. Maybe because all I do is websites, MSN and games.. no bit torrent or other file sharing crap?

It has been truly Unlimited so far...

It shapes just like the provider you're canning, except it potentially shapes earlier and the plans are more expensive.

Telstra also don't have on-peak/off-peak times for bandwidth. Are you sure you're not on the 1500 plan on a saturated link during the day? Speeds are locked Telstra's end depending on the plan you're on and they're not changed.

I have a 10Mbit cable connection that my employer pays for.

It 'may' be shaped after 10GB but I haven't been shaped yet.

What would stop you from getting that here in Australia, through that provider? You dont have to dial up at all, so whats the deal? Besides i cant speak Japanese, or Chinese, or any-ese at all.

even when done over the phone....the phone has cable running from it right...and that cabling runs outside of your house, which eventually gets to your service provider......

hence the need for the cabling to osaka

i have TPG 1500/256 20gb then throttled back to 64, for $49 a month.
You can get completely unlimited through them for $99.
Telstra is their backbone so its quick for what it is, but i have heard of some others on same plan as me only getting similar speed to 512 :

Oh damn, this is going to be the stupidest question ever asked... ever.

Why wouldnt it just go over the satellite, like as if it was a telephone call?
