Just found the magazine - Wheels October 2005, just after they released the updated 6. It was a test between the Mazda 6 Luxury Sports, Subaru Liberty and Accord Euro Luxury.

The old model 6 also topped the Wheels Active Safety Program - but I don't think the Accord was included in that?
Either way they're both fine cars; it's just fitted into our price bracket and the other didn't!
