I think you will find most of the whigning comes from people that drive 1.8L hatchbacks.
People with Falcons and V8's and turbos generally accept they are going to pay a hefty premium. And the amount of right peddle action dictates fuel costs more than prices at the pump. Some of us have averaged 20l per 100 for a whole tank..
A 6 speed 4.0L falcon ain't a fuel inefficent car if you do mostly highway driving and little stop start driving.
