big difference between fixing a leak and doing a proper transmission service , I doubt you would have the skills or equipment to do the job properly and doing a half job is just throwing good money after bad.
the BTR aren't a bad transmission but good maintenance is essential of they won't last.
that having been said as I mentioned earlier the burnt smell probably spells the beginning of the end, the best you could hope for is a bit of an extension of it's life with a proper service. the burnt smell is from the friction materials slipping, if it is the bands slipping a good service may take the slack up and get you a bit of extra life
